speaking of that smashed guitar...well, read on my friends:
ok, here goes with the "extended" report...buckle up.
Left work at 1pm ("oooh, I don't feeeeel so good..." heh heh), drove 3 hours to the venue. Got in line, got into the arena, made our way to the floor. All the Spiral were already there, but me and my buddy Flounder found a nice slot one body deep off the rail, directly in front of where Aaron would be (center-right of the floor).
Doors opened at 6, show didn't start until 7 or so. Personally, I thought Autolux was a very good opener. Something different, certainly, but they kept it brief and I liked what I saw -- I think I will check them out again sometime. The feedback was all from the bass, btw, not guitar.
After Autolux, a fellow ETS member and very nice gal let me slide up onto the rail next to her -- awesome! Thank you! My pal stayed directly behind her, so she got a little bit of protection in return for some rail space. (My hearing is terrible, so please forgive me for missing half of everything you said!)
Before I go on, let me say that the front-line pit people at this show were INCREDIBLE, far and away the nicest group of guys I have ever seen along the rail. They had water, candy, and earplugs for those that needed it. They took care of the people in front and seemed genuinely concerned for everyone's well-being and enjoyment of the show. They didn't let any drunk thug bullies mash their way in and ruin it for everybody else. I tip my cap to some true professionals.
QOTSA was also a lot of fun, I thought. I like their music and enjoyed their set. People have mentioned the Air Jordan thing, which was truly hilarious, but two other happenings from this set MUST be mentioned:
1) Near the end, Josh held up a lighter for a while, and after it was nice and hot he announced to the crowd, "Now I can sufficiently burn my penis." He then stuck the hot metal end into his groin and twisted it around. Dude!
2) During the middle of the set, things on the floor started to heat up a bit. Apparently, people farther back somehow managed to loosen one of the rubber floor panels that covers the floor (it's an ice arena most evenings). These panels are HUGE, mind you...around 6x4 feet, I would think. Anyway, I looked back and here comes one of these panels, held aloft on the crowd! Holy fuck! And not only that, two dudes were dancing on TOP of it! HOLY FUCK!!! Josh said something to the effect of "That was pretty cool right there."
Yeah, it was. I'm just glad I didn't get killed by the thing.
QOTSA finished at about 8:40pm. Curtain came down and we started getting really excited! To this point the crowd had not been too bad, and although the tightness increased somewhat during the break, it was far from unbearable. I was surrounded by a large group of very nice, very considerate people, which made the whole show great. Behind us, Flounder and I had a cushion of about six really cute girls too, which made the tight quarters much more bearable (nothing I like more than being crushed by a fat hot sweaty beefcake lineman, mmm hmmm).
Lights went down finally at about 9:20. I knew that they had to be done by 11pm (venue curfew), so I figured we were in for 100 minutes of NIN goodness. I figured correctly.
They came out and commenced the rock. And it was good.
No, it was fucking awesome! I thought the band was very tight and energetic. I liked the new lineup, and although the drummer still had his cue cards, there were no miscues that I noted. The setlist was a good mix of new and old, hard and soft. Somebody mentioned a problem during "Closer"...this was because Trent had tossed his mic into the audience and didn't have one when the song started. They were working frantically on the floor to get a new one ready but didn't get it to him quite in time. So we missed a few lines, but that was all. A similar thing happened with Aaron's mic earlier in the show.
I have been to NIN shows where Trent was not happy with the audience (9/11/94 at the Fox Theatre) and shows where he was (2/14/95 at Kiel Center, spring 2000 in Madison) -- pretty quickly, I could tell that he was into it. You could see it in his eyes.
(The fact that I could see his eyes that well was very damn cool in and of itself, mind you.)
For the people who said the floor sucked...where the fuck were you? We were bouncing, thrashing, screaming, and throwing a ton of energy up at the stage. So there wasn't any slam dancing? Well thank the fucking lord maybe that retarded trend has finally died.
Anyway, all that collective energy expenditure was worth it, as Trent attacked the mic near the end of the show with a screaming "You guys are a fuckin' AWESOME audience!" Wow! None of those sullen "Thank you's", but a really excited TR! Sweet!
Personally, all that energy expenditure was worth it as well. About 2/3 through the set, Aaron went for a bottle of water. He took a sip and our eyes kind of made contact right at the right moment -- I stuck my arms all the way out and he tossed it right to me! Now usually, I have butterfingers when it comes to this kind of thing, but oh man did I catch it with two vise-grip steel-claw hands. Concert souvenir -- check.
Just a fuckin' water bottle, huh? Wait, it gets BETTER.
For the last few songs, I just completely let go. I knew it was getting near the end so I got both arms out over the rail and was just banging on the cage, screaming, and dancing like crazy. I was having the time of my life and I had a huge shit-eating grin across my face.
During HLAH, the band started tearing the stage up a bit. Trent threw his guitar about 15 feet into the air. Aaron climbed up on Alessandro's keyboards and jumped off, then went and molested his speaker cab, then lifted his guitar high in the air and smashed the fuck out of it! Yes! He started to walk off, then came back and picked up the neck of the guitar. Again, we just kind of made eye contact at just the right moment -- I was already halfway over the rail, with both arms stuck out right at him, and he tossed his broken axe right to me. YES! YES YES YES! FUCK YES!
Oh my god was that awesome! I will post some pics of it when I figure out how. Needless to say, I felt like the coolest kid in school as the lights came up.
My only regret from this show is not having a camera to document the best moments! I am counting on all of you to help me out with that. We need pics! Lots of 'em. I'm sure that the Strib and Pioneer Press will have concert reviews in upcoming papers, as both their concert photographers were there, so be sure to check there as well.
Anybody know who the pretty girl was standing to the far right of the stage during NIN? Somebody's GF, I imagine.
Ok, that's all I have. Thanks for enduring this, hope you got some good tidbits out of it. Best wishes, hope to make it to another show soon!
