arena tour stop .5 or whatthehell?
just as i was starting to think that i had the nin tour experience locked and was preparing for some type of disaffection or, dare i say it - tour fatigue, was i proved wrong and none of this is about the cancellation and the medical emergency.
i will spare you the thrilling details of the drive from el lay to sd. it was actually uneventful to the extreme.
we arrive and start to hang. as soon as i got there i noticed that soundcheck was going on. excellent. i hear a number of songs the most exciting of which were:
"every day is exactly the same" - which i have been jonesing to hear for the last seven shows.
one fragment of a song that has not been played before at a nin show that lead into one of the "with teeth" songs. it was of the "For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen, they're playing "burn"-level" surprise. IOW: a very pleasant one.
one completely unidentifiable song that was more thrashy/punky. jagged guitars at a fast tempo. vocals were pretty unintelligible due to the fact that there was a lot of noise outside at the time. very interesting.
oh yeah, the most amusing thing was hearing them start "the line begins to blur" and hear trent say "stop" about four bars in and then start all over again to hear him say "stop" again [in an authoritative, yet slightly menacing tone] at the very same place.
and "right where it belongs" was played too.
the biggest baddest news was that i heard the unmistakeable strains of my fave "pure-cheesy" nin song ever.
DEEP.
i took this as a sign that that we would hear my beloved "deep" that very night. it is possible that i capered for joy. i looked forward to having an arena full of the stone righteous [meaning dorky and dumb] go "HUH?"
hands down, that would have been my favorite moment of the night, possibly the whole tour. i hate when people do this on this board, but in this case i have no shame.
PLEASE, PLEASE, PLAY DEEP. I BEG OF YOU.
seriously, think of all the little ninnies getting their black lace panties in wads, not just bunches. all this may make it sound like i would enjoy the effect of the song more than the song itself. nothing could be further from the truth; i loves me some metal fromage. you have no idea how deadly serious i am about this.
that is all i can specifically remember at the moment. i know, i have a problem remembering setlists and the names of songs when they get played at an arena or venue of some other sort.
it's a flaw.
so, this whole spiral thing; have to say that i called it proper. while it is still clearly in its formative phase, they are doing their level best to treat the members well and get what was promised delivered. for me, that is all that matters.
they even had a couple of the tour dudes, very cool the both of them, come out and ask who had received their spiral goodies [and who hadn't] and what city you were from.
i got my package and had absolutely no problem getting my tickets, which were given out early to decrease crowding and help the people who didn't get their membership cards in enough time. we were lined up early to be let in. i had a vibe that was going to happen and disposed of my belongings way before the time that was originally announced arrived. all of this was done with tact and courtesy.
well done. thanks.
in the arena, i get the squished first/second row on the aaron north side, which i prefer over the jeordie side. no offense.
let me make a suggestion. if you are a fan of good music and like to discover new things, remember that reznor has a well deserved reputation for choosing great opening acts. when you think idly about skipping either of the acts on this leg of the tour or maybe just heckling them while you chant "NIN" in your mind, think again.
imo, you get your money's worth even if the show were just nine alone. think of the savings if you go and really enjoy QOTSA and autolux, both of whom were in fine form last night. regrettably, most of the audience was only mildy appreciative of the 'lux and downright impatient/comatose towards the queens.
wrong answer.
i happen to know that if you go to a QOTSA show, you are most likely to get your ass whomped in the pit. not a slayer/lamb of god style whomping, but likely you would come out with more bruises than you had going in. QOTSA having the opening slot gives you, the audience member, the enviable position of being able to see josh homme, et al, smoke on their instruments and play some good shit without having to duck flying elbows and boots to the head. that way you are free to rock the fuck out without fearing for your well being. also, josh homme is one funny dude. while on stage he claimed that:
he was already drunk.
he was an alcoholic but that was why he was so well liked.
that his band rocked and what the hell was the matter with this audience?
moreover:
after asking if the arena served alcohol and receiving the heartiest shout of the night, in the form of a negative, he obeserved that "this arena sucks".
after being flipped off repeatedly by some dipshit, he stopped and said, "aw, he's just mad, 'cause he sucked my dick and i didn't pay him". homme went on to further relate other dick suckings that involved the guy's mom.
back to the review:
autolux played a short set of five or six songs, none of which i know the names of. they have a kinda sonic youth/velvet underground [look it up] feel and are a three piece band. worth the extra time spent at the venue for sure. this is my second show for them and i liked them twice as much as the first time. show up early, kids.
QOTSA. have to admit that i was not converted to a fan until very recently. it took me catching a live show to convince me. the recordings are good but the songs have an energy live that expands them and will convert you as well, if you open your ears. all the bands members are good players and homme in particular plays his instrument with a fury. ol' homme also does some elvis pelvis moves that are kinda cool and kinda funny at the same time.
they played, "monster in a parasol", "burn the witch", "go with the flow", "little sister", "in my head", and "no one knows" with a cool extended breakdown. there were other songs but the titles escape me at the moment. my faves were "monster" and "in my head".
on to the main event.
we were confronted with a much more elaborate stage set and lighting rig, natch, and a silver coated net curtain. it struck me that we were probably going to get "reptile" with projections a la "hurt" on self destruct. nice. the crowd was not actually that bad considering how bad the crushes i have previously been in at other san diego venues, but hey, there was still a push and i am still sore today, just not covered in bruises in weird places.
Love Is Not Enough - a rush right out of the gate. great energy and fire.
Wish - even more intensity taking the agression to a higher peak. this is when the crowd started jumping in place.
Terrible Lie - good version, but not my favorite ever.
The Line Begins To Blur - i love this song, but i was curiously less effected this time. dunno why, the performance was good. i'll blame it on the heat.
March of the Pigs - kicking it back up for a moment, the push began in earnest here.
The Frail / The Wretched - really good version of this combo song, which i happen to really dig. nicely sung and with feeling.
Closer - back to smirkville, he gave the business to the audience and they loved it. i have never been the biggest fan of this song live but this was a playful and nastily fun. ever since the "only time" break was introduced i have revised my opinion. i actually enjoyed this version quite a lot.
Burn - love it. period.
Gave Up - this is where i went, "holy shit" because these two songs back to back really tests one's mettle. awesome.
this is where the curtain came down and so did the lights. after a few moments, reznor came out and asked for our forebearance and informed us that there was a "medical emergency". after a few more moments, he came back and said that "jerome came up to me and told me he had chest pains. no bullshit. there is an emt backstage and he is getting checked out. please be patient."
the wait went on for awhile longer and the heat in the crowd started taking its toll on audience members. there was a discussion of what might have been wrong, but it was generally agreed that the longer the delay the less likely that they were coming back. much concern was also aired for the state of jerome's health. there were a couple of douches who started talking shit but they got the finger right quick from me.
about fifteen minutes or so into this i started feeling trapped and panicky as well as getting the vibe that the night was done, although i didn't want to tell my neighbors that. i signaled for a guard and asked to be pulled out. while being escorted to the side of the stage, some random fucknut said, "nice try honey."
instantly, i whipped the finger out on him too. he responded, "you don't have to be a bitch.". i bit my tongue about the fact that i felt the show was over and merely replied, "yes, that's what i am. a fucking bitch."
the lights went on about a minute or two later and the announcement of the reschedule was made by a tour gnome.
the audience was well behaved and most of us stood around dumbfounded and hoping for the best. there was some more discussiom about the likeihood of further shows being canceled, but the most chewed over topic was worry about dillon. nice to see that people still care.
so there.
p.s. i was offered rides/tickets to the fresno show by no less than two other fans. i am so tempted to go, especially since i would be most upset if any of you lot get to see/hear "DEEP" live before i do.
here i go again.
fin.
