Trent: "On another note, some of you seem to have taken offense to comments I've made here about the audience in Sacramento. This area of the site is not for press releases or sanitized versions of anything. That was how I felt, and that's that. Not every show is a great experience. A lot of our performance draws from the energy and reaction of the crowd. It felt to me (and everyone else in the band) like we were punching a brick wall for 90 minutes with nothing coming back, and that was frustrating. It happens sometimes. It IS frustrating. We're not pretending or going through the motions when we're onstage and these factors affect us and the show."
First off, let me say I love NIN. I think the band, and obviously Trent, are amazingly talented people.
Having said that, I think the band can't expect, nor should they, the same reaction they had in the early-mid 90's, nor do I think Trent really wants that. Trent, you've grown and I think your music has as well. WT, in my opinion, is the most melodic, mellow, pop-like work you've ever done. You simply don't, internally, seem to have the same rage, hatred and anger you had years ago...and good for you! Do you really want to continue feeling, in your 40's, the same way you felt in your 20's and 30's? Do you really want your audience to be 15 year olds going berserk to Closer?
Also, are we to be impressed with hired hands, Aaron/Al, smashing equipment in almost exact facsimile to the respective members that did it years ago? (Robin/Danny/Charlie). Robin and Danny, I believe, did it then because they shared your same anger, pain, rage and youthful angst. Aaron and Al do it, it seems, because they're following a template. It seems contrived and phony. You mention the rest of the band felt, about the show last night, the same as you. I don't mean to be rude, but is there ever an instance where they don't agree with you, or go along with what you feel/say? You're the CEO and they're your employees. I heavily doubt they'd be completely honest with you. And I doubt even more they'd be critical of your behavior, onstage or off.
I think you're, artistically, stuck in some type of limbo, at least from a live performance point of view. The Trent Reznor of The Downward Spiral Tour is not the same TR today. You look the best you've ever looked and I think you're the healthiest you've ever been in your life. The audience of those shows were maniacal and out of control because they, in many ways, reflected and identified with you. But now you've changed, for the better I believe, and your fans, at least some like me who've been with you for 15+ years, have generally as well. Do you really expect people approaching, or over 40 to act like we did a decade ago??? You can't go back, and neither can we.
I've been to several of your shows this year, including last nights, and yes, perhaps Sac was the most tepid, but other venues have been similar and I've read on a few occasions about audience malaise at other shows as well. It seems to be a little of an epidemic.
Speaking for myself, I'll admit that I wasn't screaming and jumping up and down throughout the entire show. I watched, listened, and generally appreciated what was on stage, and felt grateful that you've made it this far.
I love the new disc, and for the most part I really liked last night's show. I'm sorry you felt you weren't getting the response you deserve, or require to do a good show.
I can tell you, even though I was a little mellow last night, I couldn't be more appreciative of your art and the expression of it...and I know I'm not alone. Please don't punish me/us for it!
Thank you for years of brilliant artistic expression and here's to continued success. Also, best wishes to Jerome for a speedy recovery!!!!
