i know for a fact that they technically opened with "pinion"...when the lights when off....but right before that they were playing either "the new flesh" or "complications of the flesh"...im not sure if it was the band or just something recorded.....everyone around me really didnt notice though..it was rather irritating....some people just dont belong at a nin concert.!!BSFsiNNer wrote:So what song DID the show open with? I would assume they were playing the New Flesh/Pinion mix they played as the intro on the Fragility tour, it's the same thing that opens the DVD version of And All That Could Have Been. Piggy hasn't been played since the club dates, and it most certainly wasn't played at the KC show. I went for soundcheck. I got there at 2:30. They made us stand outside until 4:30 when they finally decided it would be feasible for us to stand inside. At 5:00 we saw soundcheck. It was great to be able to be right on the rail and not be crushed or have some dumbfuck kicking you in the head as he surfs over you. They played: Reptile, Please, The Collector, Even Deeper. No meet and greet afterwards. They herded us back to the mini-restaurant we had been waiting in and held us there until 15 minutes before doors opened.
My opinion for soundcheck is this: if there had been a meet and greet it would've been (more) worth it. If they would've done it earlier (say around 3:00), there would've been only about 50 people and perhaps meet and greet would've been more likely. But as it turned out, I stood in line for 2 hours in 10 degree cold to see 4 songs up close. The band was very focused on their job, checking sound. And you are guaranteed NOTHING, sometimes they won't do a soundcheck and you won't find out until you've been standing there forever. I would've loved to have met the band, but that didn't happen. That's my review. (And yes, as someone already said, Brandy the spiral lady is sweet as hell. I think it was the retarded venue security making us wait outside and holding a lot of things up. Once Brandy got there, things started rolling.)
Moving Units SUCKED ASS at KC. I have tried to be positive about these guys, but at KC they played their worst of the three shows I saw. The drummer kept fucking up his fills, and the singer is terrible all the time. They did not play their good song, which they had been playing first in their set at the other two shows. The drummer tried to save his band again by thanking NIN and the crowd for sitting through their set. But man, they just blew. I believe the lead singer's response to the heckler was "Hey man, you should save your energy. We're just gonna keep playing anyway." I have seen them three times now. Once would have been enough. The drummer had a bad night, and he is the only one worth watching.
It was the sweetest beginning to the three shows I've been to on this tour. The New Flesh started fading in over the between-set-music, getting louder and louder, and then as the lights went down, Pinion got added on top. At Moline it was just Pinion, a version that slows down a lot at the end, and goes into Love Is Not Enough. At Des Moines, we had Pilgrammage which went into Mr. Self Destruct. This version of Pinion/New Flesh did not slow down and they broke into Mr. Self Destruct like mad. The breakdown of Mr. Self Destruct is awesome, Trent's voice gets real low, it kicks ass.
This was the biggest (and loudest, go figure) crowd of the three shows I went to. The floor was crazier at Des Moines. The band was craziest in Des Moines too I think. In fact, I would say this is the most doscile crowd and band I saw on this tour. It was just louder cuz there were more people.
Trent's monologue tonight went something like, "It's nice to look out there and see how many people that stuck around while I got my shit together. We have the best fucking fans in the world." Also, before Reptile he said, "How about a nice, pretty love song?" That was hilarious!
I agree that Trent has lost some of his edge. Nothing on With Teeth has the balls and fire of the Fragility tour and previous records/tours. But I dunno, you have to move on too. You can't be 30 and in your prime and writing songs about teenage angst your whole life. No one wants to see a 45 year old dude making new songs about "fucking you like an animal". Well, maybe some do, but they would be few, and I'm not one of them. His tone and focus had to change or he would've just become a caracature of himself. Deep shit huh? I mean, look at bands like Poison and Def Leppard. Those guys are so washed up, and why? Cuz they haven't changed, they're still living in the 80's man! Thank god Trent is wise enough to move on. You just have to try to remember the times gone past with fond memories.
I just really miss his instrumentals. I like it when he conveys emotions and truths through sound texture and accompanying visual effects (a la Eraser). But alas, there are no instrumentals in this tour. Maybe there will be some on the next album.
About Eraser, everyone should be able to identify with that song as it's performed on this tour. I don't give a fuck who you are, war is bad. War is not good. And if you think otherwise, go die in one and shut up. I didn't think there was a real political attachment with Eraser. The message there is that we are putting incredible effort and resources into death and destruction, and if you step back (and look at all the life and beauty on Earth, seen in the beginning video clips of the song), all this war in the world is just totally FUCKED UP. Bravo, Trent! Even though you are not doing the La Mer, Just Like You Imagined, Mark Has Been Made style of things this tour, you at least completely awed me through Eraser, everytime.
Now RWIB, that song/video is a political statement (obviously). You can bitch about that all you want. You know, I don't like Bush either, but if I was a rock star, I wouldn't be attaching my music to political motives. I like to think of music as something that can take us away from all that bullshit. But who knows, I'm sure being a rock star changes your ideals. What if you could have political impact and send a message the way Trent can? *shrug* I guess maybe he feels some kind of obligation to society to try to fight back at the injustice in our world. Whatever, I just lump politics in with religion, it's just mind control. And unfortunately Trent chooses to participate in it these days rather than rising above it. Good, truth, beauty, energy, guilt, hate... these are much more interesting to me than a political agenda. But that's the world we live in isn't it? I dunno, it's just my personal preference to leave politics/religion/mind control outside the arena for a couple hours and see some great musical ideas.
So now that I've spoken my piece, go ahead and tear it apart. Anyone ver notice that no one ever posts to give positive feedback. What a delightful display of negativity these threads are. *sigh*

I want people to steer away from this kind of thinking. That thinking that either Trent is slowing down, or that his "very-dark and very-90s" audience is abandoning him. Gothmuse seemed to have a fear that a newer mainstream crowd was embracing the band, and if you ask me that is neither something new nor something to fear. When NIN blew up in 94 I gaurantee you there were at least a few people who felt put-off by their new found popularity, but that is not something that anyone, especially NIN, should let bother them. Especially in hindsight. In my opinion, TDS made them instant legends. In the process of that popularity they might have lost some older fans, but it would have been ridiculous for them to let that bother them. I think the music list has been evolving during the show. The link might give you an idea of what he is playing, but not up to date. I really wouldn't say that people really have alternative rock radio stations. They use the term "alternative" but the word has really lost all meaning in the last 12 years. As applied to corporate radio stations, such as 96.5 the buzz, “alternative” means a very limited playlist of boring generic rock, shitty pop punk, and a little bit of what could be considerd indie rock. (I'll admit though, it's good to hear some “edgier” music making it to the mainstream) Sorry about the rant, I just have a strong dislike for corporate radio stations. I think anymore you have to turn to the Internet to hear good music. All I listen to is woxy.com. It's basically my only source for new music. I highly recommend it. It's like what radio used to be.to get to my point, nothing has changed today, except in my opinion there is a much more accomodating atmosphere for NIN to play in then there was in 99-2000. People now have local Alternative rock radio stations. Does anybody remember those in 1999-2000? Nope, by that time they had all dried up (like 107.3 or 105.9 back in the day). I would hate to use 96.5 the buzz as an example, but that did not exist 5-6 years ago. But they are a radio station that plays NIN, and quite frequently, something that I don't remember happening back during the fragile. So, NIN gains a new, younger audience, and the older fans from 6-10 years ago have kind of faded.
Why is this? Just because I may not necessarily agree with what Trent's message is does not mean that I can't sympathize. I completely understand the "deeper" yet obvious meaning, and I am able to sympathize with it. Does war suck? Of course. Do I wish we could just sit back and enjoy the world? Every fucking day. Do I agree with everything Bush has done? They either must have been MTV enslaved, or they are just "too old", which like I said earlier is a valid concern I find myself having.
So, the gene pool gets recycled with people who love NIN for what they are, and collectively after seeing this KC show we can say that NIN has lost nothing, and in my opinion has gained so much more. This lineup destroys the classic lineup from TDS and TF. I don't care what anyone says. They sound alive and incredible, and honestly I thought there were things about Fragility that sounded sloppy, but since it was the first time I had ever saw them back then I still considered it to be the best thing I had ever seen. well, I have seen them 3 times during this tour, which has been a true blessing, and all I can is that each time is exponentially better then the one before it.
Don't destroy my post. I'm just trying to liven up people's feelings about NIN. they are alive and well, and I feel no nostalgia about it, even if I am getting too old to be angry.

i think what the original post is trying to say that he beleves in what trent says. but i personaly find that hard to do. Trent has made some of the worst choices in life (drugs and so forth) and one year or two of being sober makes him a know it all of this world. i hink hes still in a bit of shock of the whole thing that he was dark so the world around him is too and now that he isnt dark why is a the world? it must be our president.
i agree war is needed to get some stuff done...
the ages at the show were incredible. i saw one kid still in dipers. and a few rows over an onld man with his grand son. it was almost set up
