ZOMG, I touched Trent Reznor!

I just came back home and am extremely sleepy. Can't think much right now.

The video on nin.com says it all. Trent gave the speech on stage at the beginning. He was pretty mad and broke a mic stand with guitar after Heresy (?), the third or fourth song I think, and Aaron threw a mic stand off the stage. Well, I think the atmosphere was actually getting better...until Hurt. Trent thanked us and said if somebody fucks up the show he wants to represent to the fans, he would kill someone. All he cares is to give good shows to fans. He thought this would be a shitty show, but he had a lot of fun and it relieved his insanity.

Hurt was interrupted again. It was loud at the beginning but we were all like, shhhhhhhhhhhh...and it became quite good. Then an asshole screamed, and you know the rest of the story. We only got like 20s of Hurt. *waiting for alice to upload the video*

They broke a lot of things at the end, which can be seen from the youtube video.

I really feel sorry for the guys, and also for us fans who have been waiting for 10 hours almost without drinking, eating, going to the bathroom.

Luckily I still have the gig in Munich, dunno if it'll be good though. Damn, I'm scared now.

this show was... beyond good and evil.

i've never seen trent in such a bad mood. i've hardly seen anyone in such a bad mood.
actually, when he just walked onto the stage at the beginning, i was wondering that there was no intro an stuff, like usually. and then he started his speech about that promoter (who definitely has a lot of enemies now) you can watch on youtube.
i really felt sorry for them and did definitely understand why they were angry but that anger was still kind of productive on the beginnning. the show was harder, more aggressive, more destructive.
memorable was really the end of march of the pigs...
trent: "now doesn't it make you feel better ... i would actually feel better if i killed the promoter..." jaaaah.
but then trent started to play hurt (third last song) and some stupid jerk somewhere on my left, which means he must have been standing directly in front of trent started screaming for head like a hole. i mean... wtf!?
well, that made trent stop, saying something like that he heard that guy and actually THAT was the moment he got REALLY mad. he knocked his keyboard off and i really thought he would jump off the stage and kill that guy instead of the promoter, and i think the audience would have totally agreed with him doing that.
they began to play the hand that feeds, but not from the start on o think, and that song represented the end of some guitars, mic stands, water bottles and stuff. and it nearly represented the end of a roady who just wasn't smacked by a flying guitar because he ducked fast enough. i always feel sorry for the nin roadies.
actually, to me, the show was kind of broken after hurt for i got quite afraid of trents temper and couldn't enjoy the gig anymore.

i made a ton of pictures during that gig and i think they were *so* awesome (or at least some of them) but then my camera got lost/stolen/whatever which still makes me really sad...
i still hope i'll get it via the lost and found, but i guess i'm too optimistic.
so you guys who were there with me will have to post aaaall your photos because otherwise i will really, really, really cry.

also, it was awesome to meet everyone. i really was so happy to get to know you and i can't wait to see you again tomorrow in munich! *hugs*

I won't be able to upload the video before tuesday I'm afraid. maybe I can meet a friend in salzburg today and give her the sd card and she uploads it ... or so.. we'll see

anyway, the show was amazing, at least until hurt, trent was obviously full of hate and it did the show some good I think unfortunately that fucking asshole screaming during hurt ruined it all. I also thought trent would jump off the stage and kill him. he should have done. it go quite scary, I'm really afraid of tomorrow, strange feeling.

and for me trent seemed much more "human" than at all other shows I'd seen him...

I have been in Konstanz yesterday too. it was only the second show I saw, the first one was in April in Frankfurt (which ended shitty during Hurt, too). I was really feeling uncomfortable with all those posts concernung the Frequency Festival and so on, because you never know what dumbasses come to see a festival and ruin a Nine Inch Nails-show...

Most people yesterday came to the festival to see Billy Talent, I think. They were okay and I like their music. But I do not understand why the promoter booked NIN as main act for the festival. It's painful to admit it, but maybe NIN should NOT play such a wannabe-festival as headliner... Fortunately this to the fact, that I could easily enter the front area after Billy Talent, because everybody was leaving (most of those 17-year-old kids surely don't even now NIN, so it was good that they were becoming tired at 9.30 p.m. and left)
I could really see everything on the stage and was absolutely freaking out, excited as a was. Then the show began with the disclaimer that Trent spoke to us and I just thought "how will this end?" I was expecting a completet desaster, because we have all learnt in Frankfurt how bad a show can end, when Trent is pissed. But the show started off reall really good! People were jumping around less than in Frankfurt, but I could enjoy the show without getting kicks in my stomach and so on - I was really happy when songs like Heresy were played. I had the feeling that this kind of aggressiveness was contributing to the energy and it linked the band with the fans, kind of fighting together against the promoter by playing and dancing. Trent said something against the promoter twice again and everybody was on his side. It was something like "there were years in my life when numerous biochemical substances were circling in my body and I wanted to like kill everybody everyday. Nowadays I'm doing quite fine, and I just want to kill this fucking promoter"
I liked the way how Trent communicated his anger, and it made the band feel closer to me, more like humans. they were becoming humans instead of remaining idols, that was a nice feeling. So I loved the gig and the atmosphere, around me there were a lot of younger persons (I am 25), but they were all having fun and not being dull, as I had feared... and I was beginning to wait for "hurt". My friend and I were plaing jokes an Hurt during the last month like we wouldn't want to see NIN again normally, but we haven't seen Hurt in Frankfurt, so we are kind of forced to visit a show again and then, hurt was screwed up again. I was close to tears really... You know, I had just overcome this "fear" that the show would be shitty, everything went quite good in an aggressive way... and then Trent was pissed again - now by the audience same procedure as every show in Germany that I see....
I did not notice that issue with the screaming guy, maybe he was too far to the left of me. I thought that Trent stopped it, because everybody was singing with him and that he just wasn't in the mood anymore (maybe also because of this promoter-thing).

In the end, it was like in Frankfurt: show started good, good audience... fucked up ending with Hurt...

Maybe he should just stop playing it in Germany or on Festivals like this one. NIN should also position some of their advisors in the countries that they are touring, so people could PREVENT them from playing on such strange festivals like this rather tiny event event in Konstanz. To me it felt strange from the first moment on, when they were confirming for Rock am See. Now I and the band know, that I was right...

Anyway, I enjoyed the POWER of the gig! I wouldn't want to miss it.

by the way it wasn't "Eraser" but "Help me I'm in hell"

There's really not a lot to add to what has already been said, except that the way the concert came to a close was really a shame as the power, up until Hurt, was emense and generally benevolent making such an end a truly anti-climatic experience. We all know Trent apparently takes Hurt very seriously, but skipping it because someone yelled Head Like a Hole (for whatever reason) is a bit over-the-top, and from the explanations on the youtube videos, blog posts it seems that he was just letting out his anger on the wrong person. This is Germany, Trent. Sue the promoter if what you're saying is true but don't punish your fans for someone else's shortcomings.

Dear Trent,

your constant whining about idiots screaming during Hurt and then stopping the song abruptly seems a little bit childish to me. Either it's just part of your show/building a special image or if you really can't stand any disruption just stop playing that song, especially at festivals.

A german newspaper (which seems to be associated with the promoter somehow - official PR partner or something) reports that the band got an extra 30k USD for playing the show and says that they actually wanted 50k.

this story is absolutly shit...the promoter do not keep on the regulations which they promised...and so they have to pay for it...that´s all....this article is written in a kind that nin sucks and they are only want money...but i think that isn´t true...the newspaper what to clean the image of the promoter - that´s childish of the promoter and newspaper too...everyone who is intelligent knows that there are contracts between the promoter and the band!

Huh? Are you asking what the difference is between not playing a song at all and stop playing it halfway through? Not that hard to figure out, is it?

I'm only saying that Mr. Reznor being an performer for many years should be aware that if thousands of people are gathered together in an audience there is always at least one asshole among them. It seems laughable to me for an artist to believe that anyone in such an audience only waits for songs like 'Hurt' to fall in total silence and admiration. If you cannot stand people talking or even shouting during one of your songs, don't play it at all or ignore those motherfuckers. And this applies especially for festivals.

To be honest and like I said before this whole 'if you shout we stop playing' thing to me seems to be more like some kind of an element of a certain image that Reznor wants to keep than anything else. But maybe it's just me thinking like this.

It's always good to have such well informed people in your own ranks.

I'll tell you exactly what the difference is between stopping a song and not playing it:

Option 1) Trent tries, and the audience doesn't shut up long enough to listen (because, you know, it's inconceivable that they ACTUALLY DO THAT at many other festivals)
Option 2) He doesn't bother, and the audience is guaranteed not to hear it, regardless

Oh, to keep playing "Hurt" before a crowd of screaming assholes is basically a suicide wish for the mood of the show. "Calculated image" or not, ANYONE would look like a dork playing quiet piano and pouring their heart out in front of stupid motherfuckers. I'm going to shut up now because there's nothing anyone can do about it now, and I wasn't at the show anyway. Split the posts here if it's a big deal.

I´ve travelled 800 km just to see the show and I´m fucking glad NIN performed at all, tx to TR and the guys for that.

To me the show was 2/3 great; I had a good view from in front of the tower, no kicking , enough space to jump and dance, the SOUND was so hi-fidelity perfect from where I was standing (at least that was perfect!) and after TBOTE everything really started to gather strength and energy and the band felt it too I think (as far as you could tell from what TR said halfway through anyway: he thanked the audience etc) - until the bloody Hurt Incident.

I just don´t know what to say about the fucking morons who never learn to keep quiet during this fragile moment or what´ll be the best solution for that: not playing the song at all? Maybe it would help to stop playing it at least for a while so people will appreciate it again.

And to the promoter: I think that KOKO HAD to know after Rock oz´Arenés in Avenches that there would be a great need of power for NIN to perform with the full light- and video equipement, because there were the same problems just before the performance in Switzerland. And they had enough time in between the show in Aveneches and the show in Konstanz to think about how to solve that problem.

And another thing, this is the second time I've read that Trent allegedly "took the stage apart." What the hell is that supposed to mean? Breaking your own instruments != taking the stage apart. That's the job of the festival's crew, and I'm sure Trent didn't want to steal the honor.

Oh yeah, one more thing. The Nine Inch Nails didn't wear their nazi garb for the German shows. They were probably afraid of being tried for "Volksverhetzung" like Ernst Zuendel.

Well, most has already been said, so I will only add this:

I was surprised how easily I could get within ten meters of the stage!
About halfway through the show, I was in the second row where I stayed for the rest of the show.

Including Rock am See, I've seen NIN live three times this year and it's always been a different experience.
Zurich was my first time ever and even from the front row.
Avenches was simply perfect.
Now Konstanz was a whole different thing.

Obviously, there was the power problem, but as others have done before me I also want to point out how good the show was up until Hurt!
The aggression certainly added something to the show which was reminiscent of the earlier NIN live shows. That's how it seemed to me, at least.

Highlights for me were Closer (awesome to dance to), No you don't (awesome to headbang to) and The Good Soldier (I love that song!).

It was also nice to be in a "wilder" crowd again.
There was lots of shoving, jumping, elbowing ... But it was always fun and never annoying. Plus, the crowdsurfers were kinda funny, too.

The Hurt incident kinda killed the mood for me and apparently for most people around me, but I'll still look back at this show as a good one ... yet a little special one.

Finally I have time to write more, but it seems all the important things are already written down.
Well, being able to watch a NIN show is always a nice thing to me. I love how Trent throws himself into the music and becomes a part of it. When he came on stage and gave that speech about promoter lying to him (I even didn't recognize him at first, I mean, why would he show up before the music started?), I sadly realized that we wouldn't get Me, I'm Not and The Great Destroyer but some other songs instead. For the first few songs, I had an "illusion" that he chose them on purpose. Look at the lyrics: "Terrible lie! Terrible lie!" "If there is a hell I will see you there." I did feel he was shouting those lyrics right to promoters' faces. And I was doing the same thing by singing along. I've never felt such a raw emotion before. Actually that was really great and I really loved it, but I don't think I can call it "happiness". *sighs*

NIN was mentioned several times by other bands.

Someone from The Sound asked the crowd,
"How many of you are here to see Billy Talent?" 90% people raised their hands.
"NOFX?" 80%.
"Nine Inch Nails?" Okay, 10%.
So sad.

Someone from NOFX teased NIN by asking a guy in the crowd,
"why are you wearing make-up? You're a man! Are you going to see Nine Inch Nails?"
*maybe the guy was pissed or embarrassed*
"Hey, it's OK. We're gay too."

Billy Talent sang the chorus of Closer and said, "BTW, next is Nine Inch Nails." Well, nobody cheered. That's why we still managed to get the second row.

I was in Konstanz too and it was my first NIN show ever...

I was really excited about them ... I stood there since 11 a.m. just for them... I never went away because I was afraid I won't get my place again

So... when Trent started his speech I thougt "Oh no... hopefully there will be no bigger problems like the blackout at NOFX..."

But I will always remember that show as my first show and I thought it was great! They played my favorite songs Piggy, Closer and Heresy
My brother who was with me was very disappointed because of Hurt he only wanted to hear this song... why does someone shout at this beautiful song... I don't know...

Because of the correct order I remember that "Survavilism" came after "Closer" ... I filmed it ^^

...and i was really happy when the singer of billy talent STOPPED singing closer, because my ears wanted to fall off while he was doing this!

Ugg. What amazed me was that the 'singer' sounded like me doing karaoke when he tried to sing Closer. Made me appreciate Trent's voice all the more. and made me very happy when Billy (is that actually the lead singers name?? And don't say i should know because they are 'hometown boys' ) stopped singing.

My 2 cents now. The show for me was still great. I was telling Lili just before the show that it had been like 10 years since i saw them last (!) Just never in the right place at the right time... I didn't recognize Trent when he came out for the disclaimer, even though i have seen lots of recent photos of him.

Was a bit sad there was not more YZ material. Really wanted to hear Meet Your Master! But the older stuff was still just has hard as it was when I last saw them! Heresy. Yes. And i was listening to Dead Souls on the way to the concert, thinking how great it would be to hear it, and bam! Thanks Trent.

The whole thing was a bit surreal for me. Without the extra power needed, the set just seemed more raw for me... Just instruments and a few samples. No big light show to distract from the music (not that the light show is a distraction! It's just i focused more on the music and feeling of the show, if that makes sense) The emotion was fully there, as well as Trent's obvious anger!

Of course the group of people i was there with helped so much too!

Das Problem entstand am Nachmittag beim Stromausfall während der Show von NOFX (der übrigens dadurch verursacht wurde, dass die Stadtwerke einen Generator falsch in Betrieb nahmen). Plötzlich hatten die Techniker von NIN Bedenken, ob der Strom für die NIN-Lightshow ausreichen würde, obwohl es sich um vollkommen getrennte Stromkreise handelte: Das NIN-Licht hatte einen eigenen Generator, über den sonst nichts anders lief. Das ganze gipfelte darin, dass behauptet wurde, wir würden zu wenig Strom zur Verfügung stellen. Woraufhin Trent Reznor beschloss, nicht aufzutreten.

Nach langen Telefonaten mit Management und Agenten in England wurde in Aussicht gestellt, dass man die Band gegen eine zusätzliche Zahlung von USD 50.000,- doch noch dazu bewegen könnte, aufzutreten. Billy Talent waren zu der Zeit bereits auf der Bühne. Nachdem diese ihr Set beendet hatten und wir noch immer ohne Einigung waren, aber vor Augen hatten, was passieren könnte, wenn NIN als Headliner von ROCK AM SEE nicht auftreten würde, willigten wir ein, zusätzlich USD 30.000,- an NIN zu bezahlen, damit die Gruppe auf die Bühne geht.

Für uns standen dabei der geordnete Ablauf des Festivals und die Sicherheit der Besucher an erster Stelle. Nach den Verbalattacken von Trent Reznor auf der Bühne und per Video im Internet gegen uns werden wir die zusätzliche Zahlung nicht leisten. Wer die Show gesehen hat, versteht das ganze Theater sowieso nicht, NINE INCH NAILS hatten jede Menge Licht und Sound vom ersten bis zum letzten Ton des Auftritts.

Und es hätte so gut sein können…

Whoa - that's some serious power consumption there. Wouldn't have thought that the lightshow equipment would eat that much power

Ja ja ja... I suppose i'm a bit of a closet fan. I probably shouldn't publicly announce that i like My Chemical Romance either, should i? I know i know, but their guitar riffs are great, and there is a LOT of Pink Floyd influence in the most recent album (the only one i own, really!!)

What can I say now that has not been said before...

Won't come back on the 'light controversy'. The show was great until the 'Hurt Incident'. They really found a way of turning anger into energy when performing. Then the 'Hurt Incident' kinda broke something for me... I just couldn't get into the remaining songs.

But overall it's was a great show. I was in some kind of trance during the whole concert. Hopefully my boyfriend took care of the photos 'coz I was too busy jumping and singing to remember I was supposed to take pics.
