Just got back in and, for the time we had NIN on stage, it was incredible. I've been going to NIN concerts since the early 90's and this is as solid as I've ever seen them. A few notes:
Boris was about as much fun as going to the dentist and about as interesting as most AM Radio talk shows. I went with an open mind that I might find a new band to listen to - but midway through their first song (was it really a song?) I realized that if the custodial staff needed a hand cleaning the restrooms, I'd have gladly volunteered. Sorry to you three Boris fans out there.
NIN was incredible. The sound was mixed to near perfection and the short setlist we got was packed full of goodies. I've been watching several Vimeo and YouTube videos of the light show, but there is no substitute for seeing it in person. Amazing energy and completely worth the drive. Went w/a friend who had never seen NIN live before and he was blown away. I felt like the crowd was pretty into it and was respectful, yet the band opted out of giving us an encore. So that plus no Great Destroyer were the only drawbacks. No chatter from Trent, but that doesn't make or break my concert experience.
I'm interested in seeing the setlist when someone posts it...I was too into it to type it into my phone.

I was on the rail directly in front of Robin. My chest and back hurt and my ears are buzzing so it was a good show. The crowd was into it. There was a encore on the paper setlist, but Trent said "good night" at the end of head like a hole; not sure if he always says this at that point, but this time he meant it. Did not hear why there was no encore. Boris set was short as well. I'd like to give a special shout out to the girl in the red shirt to my left and the big guy in the black shirt to my right-you guys were fun to be around and made the show much more enjoyable. Next stop: Cedar Rapids.

Taped it. Boris too (hold your excitement). Give me a few days. Glad to be back in Michigan after a 2 night NIN road trip. The Memorial Coliseum staff were a bunch of fascists. Among other things, when we got to the main floor we HAD to sit down until they said we could get up. Weird.

Great show. I saw them in St. Louis on this tour once already and was already wowed once. Seeing it again this time in the pit and insanely closer I was blown away again. Thought to myself during the show that this is about as good as it can get with a live performance.
I was looking forward to seeing In This Twilight up close this time, a song that just resonates deeply with me for some reason but that sadly didn't happen. I could of went without the encore if I just had that. I'm still happy. 3 1/2 hour drive for me, and I'd do it again. My guitars and keyboards will have no life pumped into them tomorrow.
Ghost 31 is just so awesome live.
Wish list on a summer tour or I guess even winter tour is Zero Sum live at the end with the Ghost section stage setup with Year Zero type visuals. I perhaps want to leave with tears in my eyes and perhaps a feeling of responsibility and or irresponsibility afterwards.

Just got back from the show. Not much to say that hasn't been said already. Was kinda bummed that there was no encore, especially after finding out that Reptile(!!!) was on the list. I thought that the lack of encore might have had something to do with the pit seeming generally tame (at least from what I saw), but now I've read that Trent broke the screen they use for Echoplex, so I don't know. Even though it was a short set, any NIN is better than no NIN and it was a great show.

WHATT!!! reptile was on it???!!!! fuck, i was realy hoping to see that song. im glad that they played songs different from grand rapids show, so i didnt have to see a lot of the same songs, even though it wouldnt matter to me much at all. im glad boris had a short set, but i was pissed that the song they played was the most annoying song of theirs. i kind of wondered myself if it wasn't about the echoplex screen why they stopped the show realy, but somethign tells me it was somethign with the venue, considering boris had a short set as well. i was looking forward to in this twilight too

There was no moshing allowed at the venue.Huff-daddy wrote: I thought that the lack of encore might have had something to do with the pit seeming generally tame (at least from what I saw), but now I've read that Trent broke the screen they use for Echoplex, so I don't know.
We were however allowed to sing and dance.
I doubt the broken screen caused the encore to be skipped though.

I'm slightly less bummed now. I had presale tickets to this show. Then the night before, my dad had a collapsed lung. He came home yesterday afternoon, so I probably could have still gone, but I was just too exhausted from all the hospital BS. I'm almost positive no matter how much I try I won't get a refund, but I wonder if they could mail me my tickets. That'd at least be some consolation.
I'm sorry the show was shortened, but for my sake, (since I didn't go) I'm glad. The one thing I'm really bummed about is missing Me, I'm Not. Excited gladcarrot came through for us again though. I can't believe the crap about the staff there. Making you sit down on the floor? What's that all about?
I've got to agree with Huff-daddy though in that the lack of encore may have been due to the screen getting a mic stand thrown through it in Columbus. What time did they take the stage? Maybe there's a noise ordinance as well that they needed to stop by 11 or so.

On that topic, some people are now saying that the reason why the show was cut short was because people on the floor did just what the venue prohibited. For real? It's not like the first time that's ever happened, rules being broken. And there was definitely crowd surfing for NIN in 2006 at this same venue, moshing...all the usual. And this time, JT (big security chief for NIN), like he's been doing regularly now, briefed the venue security guards in the trenches before the show, right in front of me about all that goes down...crowd surfer this, crowd surfer that. We didn't have chairs, so of course there was gonna be crowd surfing, especially with a crowd force like there was last night.gladcarrot wrote:There was no moshing allowed at the venue.Huff-daddy wrote: I thought that the lack of encore might have had something to do with the pit seeming generally tame (at least from what I saw), but now I've read that Trent broke the screen they use for Echoplex, so I don't know.

As far as things being thrown on/at stage, different story. Like I posted in the photoblog thread... Could it have been something to do with venue curfew policy during the week? Was it coincidence that Boris played one song (25 minutes), and Nails got on stage 15 minutes early, and, not only that, ended early? Could it have been Todd, Trent's mic dude, who threw something at a light fixture that wasn't working during Head Like A Hole and managed to bust one of the lights? Did Trent think someone from the crowd threw it? Did Trent even see that happen? Is Trent's voice getting worse? There's been lots of talk of him being a bit sick from the past recent shows. I personally do not think it had anything to do with the screen used in Echoplex not working or not being available (speculated since it was just the night before that Trent damaged a part of it). Even though that thing has apparently been malfunctioning quite a bit lately (in Josh attempting to initiate the lights), I don't think Trent would damage something he didn't have a spare of, or something that couldn't at least be fixed. You know? Even so, that would just remove Echoplex from the encore (although I'm pretty sure the same type of screen is used in segments before Echoplex)--would he honestly not do anything else from the encore just 'cause Echoplex couldn't start the encore out like intended?
One thing's for sure, it was far from a tame audience. Maybe lame, but not tame. I've been at a dull NIN show crowd-wise, where I arrived and left exactly the way I came, without breaking a sweat. Last night just wasn't the case. All across the rail from people I know say the same thing. There were also a lot of douche bags at this show, like this drunk fuck...

...who I eventually managed to get a security guard to go all drill sargent right in his face 'cause he was being a jerkoff to everybody. Seeing that happen (finally--guards normally don't tell off/threaten to remove anybody til' he/she is deliberately hurting somebody or people) redeemed the enjoyability of the show for me, 'cause it was very brutal up on that rail as time went on; very tight on the ribs, each crowd surge forward hardly ever let up like they tend to. It felt like there was a machine at the back of the floor that moved all of the people forward, ultimately crushing people like me against the rail (that very SHORT rail--just getting the lowest point of my ribs).
All in all, despite the pain I'm in today, only getting one Boris song (yes, that was just one) and no encore (which would've had Reptile & God Given
Grand Pontiff
Well, in a way that's good to hear. This was the first time I've seen NIN from the seats and that's just how the crowd to me. But, I'm more used to actually being in it rather than looking at it. I will say that it seemed that everyone in the building was singing along last night (and not loud and obnoxiously either).Clocksrun wrote: One thing's for sure, it was far from a tame audience. Man, people must really like my butt, which is fine...but this tour, I even wore a different dress & I'm sure my butt looks different. can we at least get an updated picture up there?
At least that photo was taken in Ft. Wayne during With Teeth...
So, I heard the venue security saying that Boris was only gonna be 25 mins, which didn't make sense at the time.
NIN actually went on 10 mins later that their schedule said they needed to go on. This 10 minute delay could have been the reason for no encore. There was also a 10:30 HARD curfew. So by 10:10 when the show abruptly ended, there wouldn't have been enough time to set up for the encore and play all 5 encore songs b4 10:30. At least most of us have seen the encore and the show ended with Head Like a Hole.
No definite word as to why the show ended though. Apparently even the crew didn't know until the last song.
Happy Trails to everyone who's continuing the NIN touring...I think I'm done for this year.

I saw them in 06 at this same venue and this crowd was really lame. People were getting annoyed of how active i was...thats kinda sad.
It kills me a little to know that reptile was on the encore.....I really really wanted to hear that, and I always want to hear hurt, considering thats the song I fell in love with first.
Did the venue really have some crazy curfew? I was wondering why Boris ended so soon.

My first NIN concert was pretty awesome........until there was no encore...no hurt...no reptile...no echoplex. Yeah that sucked.
But it was still pretty exciting for me since I'd never seen them live before...I mean we Justin climbed up on the speaker...he was so close!

I saw one of the guys pick up a glow stick on the floor and throw it into the white rectangle of the screen and it didn't fix anything. But I don't see if Trent would end a show because on of his guys did it, unless he didn't see it who did it. I wish Justin gave more of an explaination...Clocksrun wrote: Could it have been Todd, Trent's mic dude, who threw something at a light fixture that wasn't working during Head Like A Hole and managed to bust one of the lights? Well this show was amazing for me [We got Me, I'm Not and The Big Come Down!!!
I don't like Boris, I saw them in Grand Rapids too and just didn't like them then. So I tried to get into their music at this show, and I was just kinda bored. Anyway, I'd like to thank Eric so very much for convincing me to be that close up and for trying to push back on the crowd! This was going to be my last show, but I may try to go to Cedar Rapids if the weather conditions are ok. Oh and I got to say hi to Leo after the show.
EDIT: Oh I just remembered... Who the hell crowdsurfs during Ghosts, seriously? Oh and did anyone see that one girl that tried to climb on stage?? Funny stuff.
Master Traveler
I was definitely disappointed with the abrupt ending, this was the last show for me for this tour, the 6th one and i was hoping for a good long one for no reason other than it was my last show and that's just how shit should go down. But I have to agree that the venue was stupid with the stupid rules, and a lot of the crowd was shithead. I had first row on the left near the stage, and a large section of people were sitting in the seats the ENTIRE time. I find that to be somewhat disrespectful for a band who is trying (and succeeding) to put on an energetic show and get us moving. And also disappointed that boris only played one song. I really enjoyed them in grand rapids and columbus. Very ambient psychadelic groove with the last few songs they play, would be great stoned. The security actually took the time and effort to crawl over the side walls (maybe 3-4 small walls the way it was set up) to go about 20 feet into the floor in front of my section to drag a guy out by the arm because he was smoking a joint. They seemed to be going out of their ways to be anal retentive shitheads. I hope they aren't surprised that the arena doesnt get many rock acts in the future (i hope) until they abandon the stupid curfews and rules. I was 3rd row in the pit in columbus and got my ass absolutely kicked and handed to me.... the experience in this crowd would have been completely different because of the rules had I gotten floor tickets.
Grand Pontiff
If throwing shit on stage is what prevented us from getting an encore, I'd like to give a big thank you to the shitheads that were chucking glowsticks all night. And also to the fucktard who threw what might have been a shirt or jacket at the stage, good job.
Not only was there no encore, Trent was so pissed that he set off a nuke.

Normally I don't like mp3 conversions but I'll make an exception here.
The FLAC file has the first 30 seconds cut (not part of performance) as I adjust my mic and sound. The mp3 does not.
The NIN portion will be up within a day. There is already one audio source on Dime!
Here are a couple of pictures I took...

Thanks so much, gladcarrot. I took a friend to the show who is a huge Boris fan, and even though he was upset they only played one song (as was I, mainly for him since I had seen them two shows prior), he said if it had to be any one it'd be Untitled from Smile. So I'm gonna definitely give him this bootleg and any others of them opening for NIN to make up for the terrible let down (that I'm now starting to assume had to do with the venue's insanely early curfew since NIN pulled a fast one too).
