For some reason, "God Given" was killed from the show. Earlier in the afternoon, we were able to hear the soundcheck from outside and were treated to:

The correct ghosts songs were:

The rest of the setlist is correct. Josh wasn't on stage at all for Ghosts 1, then came out for Ghosts 5. Great show, better than Greensboro. Getting to see Vessel again was nice, and The Beginning Of The End was a pleasant surprise, or as Trent put it, "Another outdated song". As with Greensboro, I got a lot of pics, which I'll post in the next few days once I get a chance.

Also, at the merch booth, they had the Demon Seed and 999,999 shirts.

Hmmm... I can confirm they played Ghosts 19 as that's the rain visuals, but you are correct about 21 & 28. Augh! Thanks for the double-check!!

You're right, it was Ghosts 19, got mixed up, but I'm 100% positive they played Ghosts 1 then Ghosts 5, those two are pretty destinctive, and easy to tell apart from Ghosts 21 and 28, and Josh wasn't on stage for the first Ghosts song, so it couldn't have been Ghosts 21.

this show was fucking amazing!!!!!!! and now to wait patiently for a bootleg (hopefully)

Excellent show! The visual interpretation of the music is unequaled! To call it a "light show" just falls sooooooo short of the mark. They were simply incredible! The 3D effects were.....well, they just WERE! If you've had the pleasure of witnessing the spectacle you'll know, and if you haven't been do try to go! The bootlegs don't do anything for the effects. I've been to a lot of shows and short of Pink Floyd or maybe U2 there's no band that can compare.

To bad there was such a police presence in the venue. It's such a beautiful and open space(Is there a bad seat?) The show could have really gone to new heights with the addition of wafting clouds of pot smoke! I only smelled cigarette smoke right at the end of the show, and we think that was coming from the board area?

2008-11-05 Nine Inch Nails, John Paul Jones Arena, Charlottesville, VA

Aside from the obvious intensity, raw sexuality and themes of anger and hatred ("No matter how good we play tonight, it will be impossible to follow last night's act. I guess I will have to find new inspiration for my hatred and anger now."), NIN has one of the most mind-obliterating 3D light shows in the business. There is a waving wall of lights at the very back of the stage and three separate screens of light that pulse with the music, turning different colors and occasionally interspersing video of Trent Reznor amongst the static, blood-red corpuscles, smoke and pouring rain. At one point I swore I saw the Martian face on Mars among the seemingly living organisms that ran across the screens behind, between and in front of the band for about half of the show. It looks as though the entire band is playing inside of a box of living light that changes emotions along with the band's music.

Another innovative idea was placing cameras at seemingly random locations throughout the arena capturing audience members screaming, jumping, dancing their *sses off and, at one point, apparently having wild sex in one of the public bathrooms (possibly staged). They played almost all of the songs from the most recent NIN album 'The Slip' (2008) and quite a few from 'Year Zero' (2007). Although I wasn't very familar with the material I was impressed by the heart-attack-evoking music and gut-wrenching lyrics.

Since I don't know sh*t about NIN songs, other than Johnny Cash covered their song 'Hurt', I will just give the Charlottesville set list here from the forum. I thought 'Hurt' was particularly poignant.

Good show. Small arena. Very tame audience. But I have a tendency to compare every show I see to the last one I saw in Philly, where NIN plays like a house afire every time. (Out of 10 shows I've seen four in Philly.) So the energy may have been tame by comparison, but I thoroughly enjoyed celebrating Obama's electoral landslide in my new blue state with my favorite band.

We stood by the soundboard and could see the entire show quite well, even my vertically-challenged non-ETS friend had a good view. (It would've been great if everyone in the soundboard area could've obeyed the no-smoking rules.) TR sounds quite hoarse and he was hard to hear on some parts of songs requiring his higher range, but not enough to mar any enjoyment of the music. I will miss Josh Freese, that's for sure.

Yep, just about everyone in the board area was smoking, including an elderly couple who were also talking loudly through the show. Most annoying.

Yeah - what was the deal with the geriatrics? I saw many older peeps at the show - which is cool! I just turned 40 and plan on going to shows when I'm fuckin' 60!!

At least you didn't have a drunk redneck breathing fire down your neck and singing the wrong lyrics the whole show!! He did calm down after a bit! :-)

freakin' exhausted after three AMAZING shows (Greenville, Greensboro, Charlottesville), but had to give some props.

This was the tamest crowd I've been in (which was fine with me after already being the pit for both the SC and NC shows), but it was in no way dead. Just less douche bags than usual, less crushing, only one rail carry-over that I saw, and I could actually hear the Ghosts songs and Trent's singing during Hurt and ITT because there were less (unfortunately not NO) assholes screaming or singing like they were trying out for Metallica during those songs. But it was an awesome show.

AND NO MORE BUSH/McCAIN IMAGE!!!!! NO NEED ANYMORE!!!!!

I definitely have to agree - it was a pretty subdued, respectful crowd, but there was no lack of enthusiasm.

I also lucked out and managed to find a spot on the floor with mostly short people in front of me, so I could actually see the stage for once

The venue was beautiful - I'd love to see another show there. Plus, the drive from Virginia Beach to Charlottesville up 64 was gorgeous.

Did anybody notice that last weekend they were selling tix for like $10 to the general public via some radio station deal? Is that a JPJ Arena deal or what? Should I always wait til the last minute for JPJ's tix?

I recorded Only and got great close-ups but for some reason the video file doesn't work properly, the sound works but the video is all choppy.

This was a great show! My friend & I drove from Richmond and after the show, we stayed inside until we saw Trent walk across the floor with a security guard, heading out while the equipment was being taken down. We walked around to where the buses were and happened to catch Justin coming out and got to talk with him for about 10 minutes.

BEST SHOW EVER.
this was the best concert i have ever been to...

the fact that me, im not and vessel were played made MY LIFE. apparently, after checking the other setlists for other shows, me, im not is a concert rarity and i feel SUPER fortunate to have seen/heard it live. if only trent would have played sunspots, i could have died happy right then and there ;)

no malfunctions of equipment or issues w/ sound as was the case w/ many other shows apparently.
