Been waiting for a show with The Wretched and Ghosts 21. Got Both. Sweet.

Suppose I'll edit and add a little more. I was on the rail, and yes, there was more filming, of both the crowd and the stage pretty much the whole time. More sweet.

Such an awesome show! My finals week is next week and i found myself feeling really, really tired and not wanting to even go tonight. But, tickets were birthday gifts, so I went, and I'm so glad I did. This is only the second NIN show I've been to, the last one being from the With Teeth tour, where there was no encore and my seats sort of sucked. This time however, I had a perfect, head on view (I wasn't on the floor unfortunately). The lighting and screen effects throughout the show were really awesome and the band (and crowd) were full of energy, much more so than last time. Last time the people in front of us were sitting down eating fucking nachos like it was a Blazers game, but this time, everyone was really into it. I don't have the tracklist memorized, but I was happy with how long they played, and the encore we didn't get last I saw them was played tonight with four songs.

Songs I was especially stoked to hear: Only, Hurt, Piggy, God Given and In This Twilight. I'm so glad I went. I've been so busy and so stressed I've kind of lost touch with some of Trent's newer stuff (Ghosts and The Slip, pretty much) and seeing them has made me remember why I still refer to them as my favorite when it come to music. It's like I've fallen in love with Trent all over again, hehe.

I think that the Ghosts track missing from your setlist was Ghosts 28-- it was the one with the video of the trees reflected in the water and Robin playing the banjo, right?

This was my 5th time seeing NIN live in the past 12 years (my first concert was the Dissonance tour with David Bowie)... Trent never dissapoints and tonight's show was absolutely no exception! Last time they were in Portland they played at the Clark County Amphitheatre and it was fuckin' cold (still an awesome show though.)

This concert convinced me that I actually prefer the live version of Terrible Lie--it is a great song on PHM, but fuckin' mind-blowing live!

Trent gave us some compliments on being a good crowd, he said a couple words about the tour wrapping up shortly and took a moment to introduce the band ...but did no talking other than this.

Trent was really cool and threw two tamborines into the crowd for people to keep--how nice!

I can't wait to see some pics from tonight's show!

EDIT: At the end of Terrible Lie Trent knocked his mic stand off the stage. Then a crew member placed a new mic on stage and a moment later Trent used his guitar like a baseball bat and sent the mic & stand flying, and then he threw the guitar up in the air, letting it crash down onto the stage. It was fucking badass.

EDIT AGAIN: I also want to add that the light show was amazing. I really liked the new video screens and all the ways that Trent and the band interacted with the set.

I got into the arena around 8pm (without waiting) thanks to a helpful security guard who showed me the super-duper exclusive NIN Presale ticket entrance. Of course, an early entrance enabled me to see the whole of The Bug's painfully bad set. In retrospect, standing in line in the cold just might have been preferable to watching them!

I had mixed feeling about NIN's performance, I'm primarily a fan of NIN's earlier work so a lot of the songs tonight were unfamiliar to me and unfortunately, not that interesting. This was my first show of this tour and I hated seeing that the screens have become an even larger and more obnoxious part of NIN's repertoire. I think it creates a real separation between the band and the crowd and I honestly don't see their purpose. That being said, I did enjoy the older songs (as well as Only) and was glad to see Robin back in the fold.

I MET THE FUCKING BAND (no trent unfortunately) but YEA!! Just got back cuz I was stuck downtown due to the bus schedules being what they are on sunday night. I was given 2 aftershow passes by a stranger (whoever you are I am eternally grateful!!) Took pics with all the guys. Robin was cool,mellow although I think maybe he took my comments about him and the new GnR album the wrong way. Alessandro seemed stand-offish,was mainly engrossed in a convo with the tap-tap revenge programmer about mac crap. Josh was really friendly,we only spoke directly for a few short minutes,but he was very down to earth and polite. Justin fucking rocks!! He was super chill. I complemented him and the guys on a rockin' show and he was like "YOU were rockin!" and I was like "What do you mean-you guys saw me?" He was like "Yeah how could we miss you?You were rockin out the whole show." FUCKING AWESOME!! Sadly no Trent But that didnt make it any less incredible! I have been a NIN fan for 14 yrs and tonight was like a dream. THANK YOU NIN for being such a major force in my life all these years. I honestly don't know where I'd be today without the drive hope inspiration and feelings of kindred spirituality your music and shows have given me. I wouldn't be the man I am today without it. Trent,Alessandro,Robin,Justin,Josh--YOU GUYS FUCKING ROCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!And none of that shit would've went down like it did if it wasn't for Kayla,Katie and Tessa. You girls are the coolest chicas I've met in a LONG fucking time. I had a great time with you all.And ups to Riot for the ARG flags and for the hot dress-you ROCK girl! Yeah, I noticed it. I can't say there was _a lot_ of filming... but there were definitely 2 people that looked somewhat official and were filming from the pit as well as directly in front of the stage, and from the side of the stage where the crew sits. They had pretty nice DV cams.

I just noticed that you missed Terrible Lie. All the other setlists from previous nights have Terrible Lie right after Wish...

I agree, there was a lot of filming. I was in the first level of the balcony, and someone (couldn't tell in the dark) walked by with a camera held high during Piggy.

Before the show another guy was walking around film crowd scenes, and then during various parts I could see him up at the rail.

It would be awesome if Portland was part of the official DVD. It was an incredible show!

I just went through the setlists for the past three tours and I wanted to point out that this was, by far, the longest setlist that NIN has performed in quite a while! ...I'm not sure how long the set list was for The Fragile tour with the three big video screens... but last night's show was much longer than the previous two tours:

With Teeth (2005) - 23 songs (counting Pinion and The Frail)
Beside You in Time (2006) - 21 songs
Lights in the Sky (2008) - 31 songs (counting 999,999 and The Frail)

Can I just give a big THANKS to Trent and the guys for coming to Portland! I was so dissapointed when they skipped Portland earlier in the year--but SO HAPPY that they came back to P-Town!

Third time seeing NIN, and I have to say this was their best show ever. As somebody who has followed them religiously from my teen-age years (PHM/Broken/TDS) into young adult hood (Fragile) and now into my 30's (YZ, Ghosts, Slip) I have to say his performances have simply gotten better with time.

If this is the last major production tour he does, it'll be sad, but it was well worth the 1.5 hour wait in 40 degree weather for it!

As a side note, the Frail/Wretched I've never seen live in person. They didn't play it in Portland in 2005, and those are two of my favorites overall from the catalog so I'm stoked I finally got to see them live.

I actually thought there was quite a bit of filming. I started up about 3 people back from the rail right in front of Justin, and stayed there until "Gave Up" (decided I had taken enough of a beating and wanted to enjoy the show). I backed up and moved closer to the wall at that point. I saw the guys you're talking about, but there were several other guys with high quality equipment who kept walking past my second location, going into the crowd for more crowd shots as well as filming the stage.

It seemed like Trent was playing to the camera a bit as well. I can't remember what song it was (fairly early on), but he definitely held his pose longer than normal because the camera guy was right below him and he knew it. He also embellished his vocals (at least compared to the July Seattle show I went to - "This is the only time I really feel alive" during Closer, as well as other parts where he put in extra "hey hey hey" chants or whatever), and was definitely high energy from the start.

I would be really suprised if at least part of this show didn't make the DVD. The crowd was great too, and the moshing and crowd surfing was pretty intense.

I am pretty sure that they played The Frail/Wretched in 2005 at the Rose Garden... but they did not play it in 2006 at the Clark County Amphitheatre. Glad you got to see it Adversus, it is one of my favorite live songs as well!

Damn, I must have really been out of it then, because I don't remember. Although in 2005 I had the *great* (read the sarcasm) luck of standing in the middle of 17 year old emo kids who smoked pot the entire show. So it was probably the contact high :/

great show, glad we got the wrecthed, vessel and god give. I liked this set better than the seattle show, but both were awesome

i was in the pit most of the time with my canon rebel xt, i got a little over 1000 shots that i will upload when i get home later this week

haven't posted here in a bit but I wanted to make a couple comments. (Not much left to be said at this point of the tour that hasn't already been said a thousand times already......)

- Robin Fink was fucking ON last night! He & Josh gave me a boner.

- this was probably the best performance of "Terrible Lie" I've ever heard, including all bootlegs I have. Seriously. It was fucking awesome.

- "God Given" exceeded my expectations and I hope that one sticks around on setlists in the future

- the one (usually annoying) thing that was yelled out during "Ghosts 28" was actually really funny. Some dude very wholeheartedly yelled out "It's so fucking beautiful!" or something like that. Surprisingly it didn't ruin the vibe.

- pretty sure he changed some lyrics to "The Greater Good" but I'll need to hear a bootleg to be positive.

- the crowd was really great in my opinion. No douche bags and pretty good energy. Saw the filming and hope it amounts to something.


....fuck, everything was great. So sad it'll be the last show I see of theirs for a long time. Great night.

All I wanted for my birthday was for them to play The Wretched, so I'm a happy camper.

The show was great. I'm so glad I ended up on Robin's side because he was killer to watch. He rocked the shit outta it. And I was glad to see Freese one last time before he leaves the lineup. I'll miss him.

Gave Up was a highlight for me, as well as God Given. Terrible Lie is never my favorite, but it was particularly good tonight. Any night with Trent smashing his mic stand with his guitar is a good night.

I also dug The Bug. They were very different than anything I've heard before, and Warrior Queen was interesting to watch perform.

A big thanks to everyone on the floor. It was pretty high energy, and there was a low douchebag ratio. I had a lot more fun on the floor this time than I did in Seattle back in July. Hi to anyone who was around; I was in a bright yellow tshirt with the number 24 on the back.

A few fat, bald frat boys in front of me kept yelling out during the Ghosts set, "What the fuck is that? What the fuck is that, a xylophone? What the fuck is that?" I wanted to crack their fucking fat little heads open. They got up and left for most of the duration of those songs though, so it wasn't too bad.

My wife and I were sitting in the 122 section (Row K, seats 22/21) and there was what appeared to be a mid-late 50's mom with her 12-13 year old son a few rows ahead of us, just rocking out.

Aside from the black wearing emo kids who missed the early/mid 90's are trying to make up for it, I'm surprised at the diversity of NIN concerts now. Old and young alike, that's great

People on the nin.com forums are complaing about a tame boring crowd.
From where I was, it was crazy.
I was at the rail, and I was pinned and beat up the entire time.
The roughest crowd I myself have been in this tour.
It was amazing.


The energy at thes show was great.
Even JMJ was rocking the fuck out.

Holy fuck! I just got back, sans balls, from Portland, and from just about the best fucking show I could've possibly hoped for. Here's my lengthy, rambling rundown about it that absolutely nobody is forcing you to read.

All the talk going into these final few dates is whether or not we are seeing the last of this particular incarnation of live NIN. Don't know if that'll turn out to be the case, but if it is, this was a hell of a show to go out on (for me) and I appreciated every goddamn second of it. Knowing that this could very well be my last chance to "rock out", as they say, to MOTP, Gave Up, et.al, I decided to act as though it was. So "sorry" to any pussies I may have somewhat damaged during Wish or Terrible Lie, but I had to get mine. More comments for you pussies a little later on.

The Bug? Started out slow, but really built up a head of steam by the finish. Basically the inverse of what I'd have to say about Crystal Castles' performance in the summer. I dug it, and bonus points for Warrior Queen's "hardcore" booty shake, which is just something that I really never thought I'd ever see before a NIN concert.

I don't even know where to start. Or I guess I started already, but there was just so fucking much about last night that I loved. Great, great, fucking fantastic, top-notch, capital show. And pleased as pie that we got half a dozen or so differnt songs than Seattle (Wretched! Yay! Ghosts 28! Yay! Vessel! Double fucking yay!!)

Trent was truly in rare form, showcasing more aggression and ferocity than I've seen from him since '95. In fact, I'd say for the first time in a long time (for me anyway) Trent was the absolute highlight of his own show. That's not a slight on his performance from any of the shows I've seen in this decade, he's never not been great, but last night was something else altogether. Don't know if it was fueled by 3D frustrations, desire to end the tour/be filmed on a high note or something else entirely, but as has so often been the case before, Trent's pain was definitely our gain.

Robin: I spent a good deal of time in front of the Finckster, and his weary looking ass rocked the fuck out of the joint. It's been said before, but he really was born to play guitar in this band. Apologies to anybody eles who ever wielded the axe for this band, but you're just not Robin Finck. (No apolgies to T-1000's brother though. Fuck you, Filter boy!)

Justin: I thought he was great in Seattle, but in all honesty he had a fresh-faced 'deer-in-headlights' look for much of the time. That's long gone, replaced by a bruised and battered man who looks like he belongs in NIN. The trial by fire has come to it's end. Verdict: JMJ deserves to stay.
As an aside, I can't believe that 'fro lasted the whole tour.

Alessandro: I was incredible, as per usual.

Fuckin' Freese: I really hope his rumored re-joining comes to fruition, but if not, I'm happy to have gotten the chance to see him with this band one more time. Ilan has big fucking shoes to fill, no doubt.

Highlight: Trent going into "self destruct" mode at the end of Terrible Lie.

Lowlight: Yay, Me, I'm Not...Psych! (Warning instead, though at least someone took my advice from the Seattle thread, making the guitar do what it's supposed to do at the end of the song. Don't think it was my words responsible for the change? How else could it be explained, huh?) And if I'd had my druthers, Reptile would've replaced The Good Soldier, but I don't think my life will be adversely affected much by this.

I thought the crowd was pretty damn good, at least for what I wanted. I was worried at first when I saw far too many people remaining still during the opening songs, but things turned around for the better by MOTP or so. I see some disparity in opinions about this, but I moved around A LOT during the show, more than I usually do, and I can attest that there WERE some very action packed pockets of the crowd (you just had to find them) going on at nearly all (appropriate) times. The fact that were so many timid timmies made it all the easier for me to get exactly where I wanted to be with little effort.

Having had the advantage of knowing what to expect from the show, I was able to navigate my way to the back at just the right time to smoke some hash and enjoy the visuals (which really do look so much better from afar. If you're going to this show, move back, like in front of the soundboard once the Ghosts come on. If you're worried about losing your spot, slink your way back towards the front during the end of Great Good/Pinion while everyone is standing around. You'll thank me)

Confidential to anybody in the trenches who had a problem with all the movement (and I know for a fact there were a few of you): I appreciate (and can relate) to your fantasy about wanting to be as close to the band as possible without having to fight for your spot or otherwise be hassled by those around you, but it's very unrealistic. You're at the front of a Nine Inch fucking Nails concert. Deal with it or move to the side or the back where things are likely to be less chaotic. If you can't beat 'em, join 'em or get the fuck out of the way! Seriously, I hope that some of the people I see here and elsewhere complaining about modern day NIN's lack of aggressive destruction aren't some of the same twats I see at these shows standing around like they're at a fucking shoegazer concert. Ever notice the crowds at those old shows? You'd all be fucking dead!!!

Venue wise, I have to say I prefer the Rose Garden to Seattle's Key Arena. It seemed almost identical at first, but as I made my way towards the front, I realized that the place isn't as wide and the stage is much lower, making for a somewhat more intimate vibe and something closer to a club or theater ambience (at least in comparison to other arenas I've
been to).


When your lone "grievance" of the night is a song you thought you were about to get being replaced by one you like almost as much, you know you've just been to a great fuckin' show. If this really was "it", all I have to say is fucking thank you. Thank you Trent (and co.) for giving me the best concerts of my life and for ending a great run on such a high note.

Don't know if I can say this was my best show ever, as Seattle had the element of surprise going for it (and the Zero-Sum outro, which, coupled with the preceding In This Twilight, is quite possibly my favorite live music moment ever), but goddamn this was good. I've seen this band a lot over the years and this would probably be the second bestest show out of those. I hope the remaining four stops are as strong as this one for everybody lucky enough to be going.

Hey, I could probably find this if I spent 16 hours (that I don't have) looking...I was wondering what kind of guitars and basses were seen being played last night? Or any night? Also, if anyone recalls the Jeordie/Aaron days, what did they play then? I was at the show last night, my first show (but my 10th show) being out of IL/IN/MI/KY/OH area...and it was superb! One of the greatest live NiN shows I've seen.

Yeah, I noticed it. I can't say there was _a lot_ of filming... but there were definitely 2 people that looked somewhat official and were filming from the pit as well as directly in front of the stage, and from the side of the stage where the crew sits. They had pretty nice DV cams.

People were filming so much because of this lovely bit of news from Trent.

One of my friends took about 50 minutes on a DVcam from up where he was sitting. I was on the floor and got a few minutes in 720p with a little cheap handheld. I took some pictures as well... unforunately most didn't come out worth anything as I wasn't willing to take the risk about security not knowing hardware was alright to bring in. I brought old stuff that wasn't going to be too heart breaking if I lost.

Like others, I'm quickly approaching finals, but if and when I get around to uploading video, I'll let ya'll know - even though I'm rarely 'round these parts of the net these days.

Whoever the chick was sitting next to me in section 113, row G, seat 4 (I was in 5) I think it was really cool that we sang along together and I don't know who you are!!!

What was best about this for me was I was able to take my friend to her first NIN show and only 4th concert ever. She loved it. She was a band geek and so the Ghosts portion made her really happy.

As with Key Arena in July, I got the impression that a lot of dipshits didn't appreciate the Ghosts portion or some of the less intense stuff (save Hurt), but this was a pretty well-behaved crowd. It seemed like there just weren't enough people there.

Wish I'd been on the floor instead of a seat, but I had a good shot at the stage.

Also, got to see Rob (first time seeing him even though 4th show - I'm oblivious) and I geeked out over him. Plus, that guy who was on the screen during Survivalism who was working on a board and dancing his effing ass off - he was in my line of sight too and NEVER quit. I couldn't believe it! I hope he drank some Gatorade.

NIN does not disappoint. I was a happy kid. And I'm glad to see that the setup had changed to a degree since July. This act does NOT get stale.

he did the interaction in chicago at lollapalooza too, it was a crappier show than last night... this was the best nin has been since fragility 2.0 and ive been to lots of shows in between. though robin and justin have nothing to do with it, purely that trent has a better grasp of the performance (id rather see aaron and jordie back in the lineup, it would have made last night EVEN BETTER)... anyhow, the real thing im replying to...


HOLY CRAP HE KNOCKED IT OVER TWICE........ THEN THEN THEN robin goes "hey wait, i want to be like trent" and knocks over his mike stand too.... it was soooo cute, like when some little kid acts like his dad

jeordie and aaron played fenders and hagstroms, respectively (and mostly but not always)...

trent BRIEFLY played a parker last night, justin played a thunderbird and a couple fenders, didnt notice the guitars when he had those though... robin played mostly gibson les pauls with doubles instead of singles (two of them for sure, though similar had different pickups so i could tell them apart)... he also had a stang in there somewhere... and what looked like a dano

I thought I saw the Parker, but, unfortunately, I didn't get GA tickets like I wanted. I've seen Trent play some Gibsons too, didn't he? His usual main black guitars are Gibsons, aren't they? It's been awhile since I've been up front & center. Fenders are so easy to see from the seated levels, so I had no problems picking them out last night, but I knew Trent wasn't playing one.

I recorded the entire show from the 217 section, Half was in 480 standard, and the other half was done in 720 High Definition. Next time i will make sure to record it in its entirety of HD. Will post the torrent, with my included Seattle Show by January 2009.

Yes there was filming, both on stage, and below the stage, and from different levels of the arena, they were everywhere. Also i was in the 217 section. This is about four millennia late in internet time but I had a ton of fun at this show. The Rose Quarter staff were about as stoned as the crowd but whatever. It was fantastic.

The best parts were being close enough to watch TR tap out all the beats and freakouts on his gizmo during Vessel and the Buttsex. I yelled and clapped during the Buttsex. Really loudly.

Add me to that list, please. I've never seen such a tight show. Lightyears more "together" than Seattle in May, but then, so early in the tour, bound to be some loose threads.

It was an awesome show!! I also met the band after wards thanks to Josh Freese, for the super awesome tickets and passes. I was glad that I made some fan really happy by selling the 2 tickets that I had already purchased to him for 50 bucks (for both)! The show was amazing! This is concert number 7 for me in the last 15 years....and not the last.

People on the nin.com forums are complaing about a tame boring crowd.
From where I was, it was crazy.
I was at the rail, and I was pinned and beat up the entire time.
The roughest crowd I myself have been in this tour.
It was amazing.


The energy at thes show was great.
Even JMJ was rocking the fuck out.

-The girl that yelled, "TRENT YOU'RE SO SEXY!" during 'Hurt' better get what she deserves. Cause that just isn't aloud.

There was a shit load of filming. Two, maybe three cameras rolling the entire show. I was right in front of Trent on the rail and I can't count how many times the camera was in my face during the show. They got some good shit.

I don't know anything about a tame crowd....? We were in section 112 the row in front of the handicap area...and the fans in the wheelchairs were rocking out, there were people in the aisles dancing and singing and screaming, NO ONE was sitting down....I had a great view of the floor and everyone down there was jammin'. So I think the fans are still and will always be hard core ('cept for the girl who puked all over the floor by the smoking area, hope she remembered how cool the show was). I will continue to rock at shows even though I throw my back out occasionally!

Who else out in ETS land has video for the Portland show? I am currently working on a DVD project for the show. I currently have 3 different video sources, including the video I shot.

I am putting everything together in Adobe Premiere CS4, and have finished mixing both the video and audio for 5 songs. In reviewing the work thus far, I would really like to incorporate as many video angles as possible. It doesn't matter where the video is shot from, or the audio quality, as I am using one high quality audio as the master audio.
