Great show! I do not remember the set list, wish I did. Someone will put it up here. Had "Artist" wristband and saw Trent backstage for Saul's set. Got lots of greetings but was mostly left alone. Took a few discreet pictures for which I will post a link some other time.

I was standing very close to the front and off to the side. Crowd seemed really into it from where I was.
Master of the Ninth Arch
I was a wuss & bailed right when Echoplex was ending to beat the traffic.

Before he started Hurt, Trent did mention that he'd been fighting his voice all night.
Master Traveler
kdavid: what artist were you with?

Would have been cool if TR joined Saul for WTF. But, onto NIN.

I managed to get a decent spot about 50ft to the right of the soundboard (directly infront of one of the monitors, great view of the stage except for the Freesinator.) I also got my HD camcorder in, and got some great shots. Importing some stuff into IMovie now, will try to get something up soon, but I have to check-out of my hotel tomorrow morning, and wont be back home to Alaska until Tuesday morning.

Trent had a little speech before Hurt, went something like: "...wrote this song during a very dark time, then gave it to a friend." I'll have to post an exact transcript when I review the footage. When he was just talking between songs you could totally hear his voice was messed up, no idea how he was still able to sing as well as he did.

Setlist was the usual as far as I know, the Encore was only Echoplex, Hurt, In This Twilight. No Good Soldier or The Beginning of the End. We did get Vessel during the main setlist.

Amazing show! The new light setup is awesome! I'll post more later because my legs are killing me!

Holy shit, that was unbelievable. Everything I heard and saw of the light show was totally right, it was sick.

Highlights: Vessel, Piggy, All Ghosts, The Greater Good, Survivalism, Only (love the new intro), Echoplex, Hurt (always a classic, like the new arrangement), In This Twilight (perfect festival closer, like an outer body experience practically)

Can't wait to see them on Tuesday!

Wow...that was fantastic! Hubby and I sat with our backs to the sound booth rail all day - I'm totally exhausted, but it was so worth it!

Set list was pretty much similar to previous lists - we had Vessel instead of Great Destroyer, the Frail melded into Closer, and no Head Down, Down in It or 31 Ghosts IV, but these latter three exclusions are likely due to the 10:00 curfew (they ended right on time).

I could tell the crowd behind us was getting antsy during the Ghosts interlude, but I expected that, given that it was a festival show. Our friends who were just checking things out at the rear said that many people were leaving to go see Kanye - I'm not surprised, since they gave NIN the smaller stage!

Visuals were awesome - Josh's Echoplex intro worked like a charm, although the "using a flashlight to erase the screen" bit didn't work at first (I saw Josh get handed a second, smaller flashlight). Trent's voice made it through the night (no falsetto), but just barely. When he stopped to make some comments near the end, he apologized for it, and you could tell it was rough.

As for those comments, he said something like: it's been 17 summers since Perry invited them to play the very first Lollapalooza - they were just some guys from Cleveland who were just so happy to be able to play beside so many great bands. He then said that he'd never have thought that (A) he'd still be alive after 17 years and (B) be playing in front of so many appreciative fans.

Anyway, just wanted to quickly post a few thoughts before crawling into my hotel bed. Many thanks to the other fans by the sound booth who helped make the long day enjoyable (nice to meet you, Jim!). We had a fantastic weekend and really enjoyed our time in Chicago. Back to Ottawa tomorrow night!

Great show!!!
Loved every second since it's been 2 years of no live NIN.

Trent and co. were great, but the audience (Left side about 50 - 60 ft back) was sub-par to say the best. But thats what I expected at a festival show as well. Was so hoping for The Wretched after the frail but I knew they had to play closer for the masses. Still wish he would of rehashed Now I'm Nothing since he hasn't played in since Lollapalooza.
But
For having voice troubles Trent did a bang up job and it was great to here In this Twilight live.

Now that my teaser/spoiler is over I can't wait till Denver

That was, by a considerable margin, the best NIN show I've ever attended. It was just indescribably emotionally charged and inspiring. The energy in the air was unbelievable and the set list was the most diverse I've ever seen from NIN - 13 of the songs have never been played in Chicago before! And, as mentioned previously, the lighting and stage design were incredible. The visual aspect was half the experience. And, I'm not absolutely positive, but I'm pretty sure it's been a good few years since NIN have performed an encore. This was a truly inspiring night.
Master of the Ninth Arch
What a fantastic show! Wow. I'm still in absolute awe.

The visuals were absolutely exhilirating! Especially during Vessel, the Ghosts songs and Greater Good. This is by far the strongest NIN line-up I've witnessed. When I saw Finck on stage right in front of me, I felt like a little kid! He has this strange stage presence to him that just makes you feel good! Hehehe!

Crowd was really good. Much better than Rage from the night before. All the fans were appreciative of the music, and were pretty respectful, and they were quiet during the Ghosts songs and Hurt. But there was some scary moshing, especially during the first few songs. During March of the Pigs, all I could see was people's shoes just flying around the stage. After Greater Good, there were some chants of "Kanye sucks"... Kind of the fans' way of saying that no one can top what NIN was doing that night.

Setlist is just about right. I can't wait to see them in Toronto again. To my luck, as soon as I'm going to Toronto for college-visits, NIN's playing~!

The show just blew me away. A fantastic way to end three extremely exciting nights of music...
Master ad Vitam
Amazing amazing amazing! I must be up tomorrow in 5 1/2 hours to catch my plane, one night at home then Toronto the following night. You could not tell in Trent's singing that he was as hoarse as he was when he talked to us. I will try to post more later. We are completely spent.
Master of the Ninth Arch
the shit he did with lights and that screen during ONLY has got to be the coolest thing i have ever fucking seen live.

it was incredible. and you know, after 19 times hearing head and lie and hurt and closer and etc live i have decided that i want him to continue to do the oldies but goodies. i think if he didnt do those songs i would miss them and the new kids should have an opportunity to experience these little ditties live as well.

but as far as my new favorite... it is hands down ONLY. that just mother fuckin rocks. i also snapped 2 great picks of when the NIN sign went up after head, if anyone wants it for their wallpaper on phone, pm me and i ll phone it to you. i cant upload my pics cause i cant figure out where they get sent to on the net for my pic home site...... /sigh
Master Traveler
front row. i'm hurtin though...show was amazing, i've waited all summer for that.

i got some rael good pics and i'll post them in a day or two.

also, the merch, as others mentioned was shite!

4 fucking shirt options. i want that federal bureau of morality shirt. now i'll have to resort to searching the net for the damn thing.

His voice was definitely starting to fade near the end of the set. It was overtly evident during Echoplex.

I recorded the entire show, beginning to end.

I think I'm going to switch to Vimeo however, YouTube really obliterates the quality. I don't think that's even in HQ mode, but the other ones were, not sure how that works...

Edit: HQ works now, looks like YouTube made the standard version available before the high quality version, make sure you select the high quality mode.

I've seen nin numerous times since the U.I.C. 94 show.

Last night. The show was good if not better than I expected.

My fav show has got to be Chicago May 05 Congress Theater.(2nd night)
All the dws tour shows were great as well as the fragile tour.

But last night.
Reminded me of the NiN/Bowie tour. That show was pretty damn good.
But a little far from being great. I don't dig Robin back in the band, but TR and him have a history. That bass player was tight but you gotta be when that homo Josh is keeping a beat.
The past NiN tours featured strong characters.
The WT tour was the last time I think i'll see something like that.

Is that Josh Wink on bass?
Bricklayer
Stay Classy Chicago...

I want to give some mad props to the fans at this show. Rage was absolute insanity Saturday night, everyone was a douchebag, it was awful.

Then the NIN fans showed everyone how to be good concert-goers on Sunday night.

To my friends in the mosh-pit in front of center stage (about half-way between the stage and the sound stage), you guys are awesome and I'll party with any of you any time.

One of the best of the 11 NIN shows I have attended, thank you Lollapalooza.

See you fucking pigs in Detroit (I hope, Trent's voice sounded ripped when he was talking)!
Bricklayer
Amazing fucking show! Also the most different NIN show I could have imagined. 1. Surprised they played any Ghosts material at a festival. 2. The lady signing the whole show on the left side (will post video later). 3. They used the festival cameras on the side screens which I didn't expect. Thought it showed a side of NIN you don't get to see besides the DVDs.

4. Did anyone else notice that Trent's left index finger was covered in blood like half the show?? You could see it real well on the side screens. He continued to play thought as if nothing was wrong. It looked pretty bloody though.
Master of the Ninth Arch
Fucking brilliant show. I was in/around the pit on the right center side, pretty close to the front. I had to dart after Survivalism because my ride was leaving, but I saw the best parts of the show.

The stage setup was the best I've seen to date. They really outdid themselves this time with it.

Best song of the night...I'm going to have to say "Piggy." It was awesome hearing it on an upright bass, and Josh Freese fucking TORE those drums up.

Also, cheers for an outstanding crowd. The crowd at the Rage show the previous night was absolutely awful. I had waited a good 5 hours ahead of time to get a good spot, which was a waste. The pushing the entire hour before Rage came on was relentless, and I got my ass fucking kicked when the took the stage. It's nice to see that NIN fans can show people how to have fun and not be assholes.

Also, who caught Saul earlier in the day? Opinions? I stopped by and was shocked at how bad it sounded. I saw him in Cleveland a couple months ago and was blown away, but it just wasn't together today. Whoever that chick that had the mic on stage was, she was awful and pretty much ruining the vocals on every song. The sound levels were all off too (where I was standing, at least), and Saul's voice sounded really strained. I was disappointed. If this was your first time seeing him, don't worry, he is much better.
Master of the Ninth Arch
fucking awesome show!

the set list was really great and the crowd was going crazy. of course i must say the crowd did have quite a few jackasses; people bitching during the Ghost material ("hurry up!" "finish the song already!") because they "want to mosh!", and the idiots moshed at inappropriate times. im sorry but Closer is not a "mosher" (not the real fans in my book, they're the ones that would yell for "that Fuck You Like An Animal song"). i had no idea trents voice was messed up, even after he mentioned it. and during The Greater Good the flashlight/wiping effect didnt quite work that well, but the crowd got the general idea. i was hoping for a few more screens during Survivalism, like the "censored by US Morality" screen, but it doesnt matter because it was awesome anyway! i couldnt believe how insane people were going for a few songs, not because the songs aren't awesome, because they are, but more because of people really wanting to mosh. oh and as for the visuals- fucking amazing! i recommend when you see the screens come down to get a good distance back to fully appreciate them. In This Twilight is really cool, and i loved the end Zero-Sum piano (if im not mistaken). fucking awesome show.

highlights would have to be all the new material played. the slip material rocked, year zero was mesmerizing, and ghosts was absolutely stunning, i could easily go to a concert of just ghosts tracks. the older material is still fantastic though, and actually even better! the line-up for this tour is superb: alley ruled. josh tore it up, especially on Piggy! justin kicked ass, he really got into it (that fist in the air really did it). i got giddy seeing robin kick ass as well. and trent, fucked up throat and all, rocked the place.

my only real complaint has to be the lack of shirts to purchase. i figured since it was a festival they could only have a few up since their were a ton of other artists. i got a LITS tour shirt and the ghosts shirt, which i got before NIN came on so i had to clutch them for dear life throughout the show!

btw, i caught Saul's performance beforehand and i really have to recommend anyone to check him out if you can. really great performance! really wish trent came out for a song or two, and/or saul come out for NIN maybe for Survivalism.

i was there saturday. from where i was, the crowd werent douchebags. they were acting the way people act at Rage shows (which, again, isn't acting like a douche). ive seen them a few times before. its the same each time. honestly i just dont think some people (non-rage fans, or at least not big fans) were expecting it to get that crazy, but it does, and those naive people assumed they could handle it. they put on an awesome show, as usual, though.

Up front, it was absolute chaos. I literally had no control of where my body was going, and I got hit on the head quite a few times by wayward fists. I guess I understand why it was so insane during the show, but the incessant pushing by people who apparently want to make everyone ahead of them suffocate A FULL HOUR BEFORE RAGE HITS THE STAGE is pretty ridiculous. And the people I was around were assholes, just frat boys looking to push some people around. BUT, ALL THINGS CONSIDERED, RATM played their fucking heart out and put on one hell of a show.

Also, on a side note (sorry to steer the convo away from NIN), apparently there was around 1000 people outside of the fence listening to Rage play. They tried to knock the fence down and climb in, so a bunch of cops were called in...crazy.
Master Traveler
I sat with my back against the front of the sound booth rail all day to secure my spot at the show and met some really cool people in the process. True NIN fans and fellow ETSers as well. Made the whole waiting process totally worth it.

The show was awesome as usual. You could tell Trent was struggling with his voice a little bit but he more than made up for it with a shit ton of energy up there. It was fun to watch. The crowd was pretty awesome for the most part except for maybe the guy that started throwing punches at another fan and started an uproar in our section during Love and Rockets (I think).

Highlights for me:
- Vessel was better live than I would've ever hoped for. The visuals and the music in tandem was nothing short of a treat. Trent was getting down during the "jam out" section of the song. Can't wait to see it again in Cleveland.

- Piggy. This updated version of the song was just fucking cool. Great visual effects with some new instruments thrown in to accentuate the little nuances in the song.

- The Ghosts stuff live was wicked and dark. Improvisation abound from the band. Trent and Josh were getting into it -- fun as hell to watch. And it really worked in the middle of their setlist before bursting right back into the heavier songs again. Brilliant.

- The Big Comedown = pure energy.

- The Warning live is haunting and outstanding.

- The Greater Good, again, was absolutely creepy. All the YZ stuff kind of had this quality live.

- In This Twilight. Is there anything more epic than that Zero-Sum piano to close the show out? Holy shit. It was like turning the last page of a really moving book (I'm a dork, I know).
Master Traveler
Well the show was indeed amazing, I think probably the best set of the weekend. I skipped out on Rage saturday to see Wilco cause I knew I didn't want to deal with the crowd and I think I made a good decision. NIN was an absolute must see and they sure lived up to it. Hearing all the Slip tracks were pretty badass, I hoped for Demon Seed in the encore (where I think it should be), but we didn't get it but that was okay. It was awesome hearing Vessel and The Warning, but still missing out on a good deal of YZ stuff. Ghosts stuff was good, as expected, Greater Good I was really shocked to see, but it did well.

Visuals=Amazing, best ones of the weekend. I thought they were fantastic and fit the show well.

When Hurt ended, I saw some people turning around, and I was about to go myself, cause I thought they would end with Hurt at this, but ITT started up and me and my friends went insane. Such a perfect song to close with. The piano at the end is stunning.

I can't remember which song it was (I think the hand that feeds? not sure) , but he kept looking at the palm of his hand. At first I thought "He's got the lyrics on his hand!!!" Then I saw the blood.

I think he cut himself when he threw that guitar.

Can I just say "Word" to that? I was so annoyed by the retarded Rage fans at the show I was (for a split second) considering not showing up for NIN, because I didn't want to deal with those people again. I guess NIN attracts a higher grade of fan :)

The show was amazing. One of the best NIN I've ever been to (and I've been to many)

Highlights: Big Comedown, Vessel, Terrible Lie (that was the song where he threw the guitar, right?), Echoplex, In This Twilight (which actually got me pretty emotional, beautiful to hear that song, looking up at the skyline of my beautiful city, especially with the last few notes of Zero Sum at the end.)

My sister (an old school NIN fan from the very beginning) remarked how strange it is to see Trent so happy, compared to how tortured he was at the first Lolla. I'm glad he's still here making music for us.
Bricklayer
What a great show, the stage and the lights with the skyline in the background - perfect! I was up front off to Robin's side a bit, it was hot as hell, people were passing out before NIN even started. It was intense, but everyone was behaving just fine. I didn't get hit by too many stray elbows.

I had to get out of there after the Ghosts songs, my beer-to-water ratio was too high for the day. Enjoyed the rest of it from a less compressed distance. Then I walked home, which was pretty awesome.

I did manage to lose my cheap digital camera, so if anyone found a beat up FujiFilm something or other, well, you can have it...
i was there, dead center and on the rail, and holy heck, this show was amazing. it was the first time i had seen NIN live, and even with the festival setting, i was absolutely blown away by the setlist/energy/interactive lights/everything else. it was really cool how the show had movements, with The Slip dominating the first tracks, then some classics, a YZ block and a Ghosts block, then back to the faves. this show exceeded my expectations in every possible way. i've got tix for auburn hillson the 23rd(?) and i can't wait!
Grand Inspector
i pretty much gave up the idea of getting anywhere near the stage.

before love and rockets, i found a spot against the barrier that surrounded the sound/lighting tent.

two guys about my age and height were already there, so i figured, hey, there is no way anybody taller is gonna squeeze in there, so i parked it.

it was pretty interesting watching all the activity going on in the tent. first, they rolled up all the tent sides. then, i spent about 15 minutes watching a guy meticulously prepare a pot of coffee. that he never made. he used bottled water to clean out every part of it. and he had a coffee bean grinder. it was like he was gonna make the best pot of coffee anyone has ever had. but then he put the whole thing away in a big metal box. i was glad he didn't make coffee 'cause then i'd really want some, 'cause i definitely would have smelled it.

oh, and i was standing next to this guy.

overall, great show, great crowd around me (except for a few of the typical asshole drunks you see at every show). the lighting was very cool! the sound was surprisingly really good.

these days, headlining artists really need to do lolla with their games fully on; they need to break out all the bells and whistles and blow people away ... and i think nin did exactly that.

i don't remember hearing so much SINGING around me before. it was really cool. a giant NIN singalong.

the only time i noticed trent's voice being scratchy was when he spoke, very briefly, to explain that he had a problem with his throat.

considering his ailing throat and bleeding finger, tr definitely went above and beyond the call of duty.

as we were all leaving, a bunch of the crowd was chanting "fuck kanye west." 8-)

big shout out to the wonderful employees at tamarind who were inundated with us lollapalooza people every night (they're open 'til 11 pm). last night, our same waitress ("oh, you're back again!?") asked if there was going to be any more concerts and i said no, and i could hear the unsaid "oh, thank god" in her head. ;-)

yeah it got rough. but again, thats how it is at a rage show. i couldnt control where my body was going during the beginning of NIN either. it got pretty insane. i would say more so than rage for me. at rage i knew what to expect and was able to hold my ground, i wasnt expecting the crowd to get that crazy for NIN. see? it all depends on where you are, and what your expecting. of course there are the few jackass frat boys looking to push people, they were at NIN too, but aside from them thats how a rage show goes. check out the live dvds. i think there were quite a few people who watched the band beforehand and thought "hey i made it through that, i can make it through rage!" nope. people werent expecting it and thats what happened :-\

This is epic. Loved your EIIRP/Fireworks video you had, it was beautiful, and considering I was so close for Radiohead that I couldn't see

Anyone else catch Saul? I thought he was pretty badass in front of his little crowd he had.

IMO, NIN were better than Radiohead in terms of performance (RH seemed bored), crowd (75,000 people and about 15,000 knew their shit), and setlist (NIN brought it out, Radiohead brought too many slower tunes).
Knight of the Royal Axe
After the disappointment of Minneapolis, which I only learned about after I flew into the Minneapolis airport (ARRRGGHHH!!), it was so wonderful to finally see NIN at Lolla.

I met up with some friends I hadn't seen in a while and some friends I see more often. It was a really great Sunday. We headed down to the Bud Light Stage as Love & Rockets were going to start, and we managed to squeeze ourselves by the rail on the far right. When NIN came on my friends stayed there and I ventured in front of Robin. Being 5'0" and two people off rail was a fucking trip. I absolutely loved it (normally I'm on rail but there was no way I was going to hang out there all day for that -- which a couple of friends did). The guys around me were surprised that I could hold my own. Heh. I kickass (literally!).

So many awesome highlights: The Big Come Down, seeing Robin back, the new intro to Only, new version of Piggy, ending the show with In This Twilight (*tears*) and TR's speech about being at 1991 and this years Lolla festivals. And I absolutely loved the Ghosts stuff, but as you can imagine, the meatheads around me were sort of whatever about it and just wanted to rock out. Whatever.

The lights looked amazing too, but I think I lost some of its effect being in the pit. I'm looking forward to CT where I have a seat a little far back, so I can take it all in.

We checked out Saul's set earlier in the day. I absolutely love Saul, but his sound was terrible. Someone needs to get their shit together in his camp.

At one point Saul said something about it sucking that people have to choose between NIN or Kanye West (is that really a choice?), which was pretty funny because that was most of the talk I heard from random strangers on the L and just walking around: "are you checking out NIN or Kanye?"

Fun tidbit: one of my friends saw Slash in the backstage area looking on during NIN's set.
Grand Inspector
did y'all see perry farrell (and his spouse) actually sitting there watching love and rockets during their set?

perry is notorious for giving a raving, rousing introduction and then hurrying off to his air-conditioned trailer.

I think TR and [s]MJM[/s] (whoops, I mean JMJ -- I'm now back in Philly and got exactly 2 hours of sleep last night!) were up there too watching Love & Rockets (aka Bauhaus Lite).
Grand Inspector
i don't know why love and rockets didn't do "so alive."

but i loved that they did "no big deal"

opening with "ball of confusion" was awesome.

edit: did anybody notice that it looked like david j. had a barack obama sticker on his bass?

nin: i really like "the frail" segue-ing into "closer."

there was a chick flashing her boobs next to us in between love and rockets and nin. woooooooo, motley crue!

Anyway I met a lot of really nice fans, no ETS people sadly, but see you guys on 8/23, I have GA tickets for that. :) P.S. I recorded a few videos that i'll try to have up soon [My camera ran out of space halfway when Trent was appologizing, sorry]

my only real complaint has to be the lack of shirts to purchase. i figured since it was a festival they could only have a few up since their were a ton of other artists. i got a LITS tour shirt and the ghosts shirt, which i got before NIN came on so i had to clutch them for dear life throughout the show!

btw, i caught Saul's performance beforehand and i really have to recommend anyone to check him out if you can. really great performance! really wish trent came out for a song or two, and/or saul come out for NIN maybe for Survivalism.
the lack of shirt option stunk! someone from chicago going to another later show PLEASE get me a federal bureau of morality emblem shirt.

as far as saul williams goes... i am sorry but he is awful. the spoken word stuff is fine but he should never ever sing. he cannot carry a tune. awful

Like I said earlier, Saul just had a really off day yesterday. I've seen him before in Cleveland and he sounded SO much better, including his voice. So don't let this performance set the precedent for you.

Yes, it was Slash. He was at Lolla this weekend. He did some sets with Perry, apparently. And Daniel Ash does not look like Slash. Ugh.

For the person who asked about the female in Saul's set during Grippo (I think) that was his daughter.

Everyone pretty much mentioned everything about NIN's set last night. Im usually a pit or not at all person with NIN shows, but for my second first show this tour (Minneapolis) I HAD to go in back to get the total views when they started the ghosts and year zero effects, that was amazing. Aside from skipping a few falsetto notes in some songs, I really couldnt tell he had throat problems until the first few lines of hurt. I didnt see some pics that was posted here from earlier shows, such as the gun and cross and Morality ones, maybe because I was in the pit frenzy for the first part. Does anyone know what song that might have been from, because Survivalism only showed the lolla crowd in the screens.

so they were sold out when i got to chicago around three, i sat behind the park's main stage and enjoyed nin for free. go me. chicago's raining this morning. can't wait to actually face the right side of the stage at home on the 20th. the ghosts stuff was eh for me. you could definitely hear kanye over it.

Blown away by NIN @ Lolla. Trent did a great job, if his voice was messed up I couldn't tell until he spoke to us and high points in the late songs. Light show is fucking amazing. I was a little timid about getting towards the front, I was still kinda shook up from the Rage Pit the night before. We pushed up towards about 20' off the front rail for the first couple songs then backed off to about halfway between the soundboard and the stage. The Big Comedown intro/breakdown was awesome. I'll see what kind of pics I was able to get, post them later.

Great show. I just got back from Chicago a couple of hours ago but Trent pulled it off. I was front row center on the barrier. Shit was crazy. Everyone was going off. There was some kid there with his father (who had to be about 50-60 years old). I was worried that I was elbowing the dad too much trying to hold onto my spot. He seemed okay though.

Highlights:
Gave Up, Piggy, Vessel, and In This Twilight.

Great show overall. Great way to close out the festival.

Edit: HAHA, holy shit, that's my video in the first post.
Knight of the Royal Axe
Man that show was soooo Fucking amazing. Everything went off during March of the Pigs, all the Rage Against the Machine Bro's were drunk and asshole but the jumping and pushing worked. Gave Up was fucking intense and I had to move to the left side of the stage about second row in front of the Lolla Banner, the small group of people that were preventing everyone from getting moshed around and pushed backwards, thanks! That group of people was what I was looking for.

The Highlights for me were probably:

March of the Pigs (the intensity was sooo good).
The Warning (Favorite NIN song, kicked ass, the moody bass fit the setting sun well)
Ghosts 19 was kick ass.

Another big highlight for me was Gunshots By Computer that Saul opened with. That was soooo fucking good. Saul's set was perfect His sound was fine, all those bitching I don't understand, the Bass was great.

I also got to meet saul, and take a picture with him. !!! Great guY!
Master of the Ninth Arch
the new intro to Only is awesome. i really like it. kind of another throw off like you dont know whats coming (like The Frail into Closer). keeping us on our toes.

i couldnt hear Kanye performing at all from where i was during Ghosts material, or any material for that matter.

and saul was great yesterday. i really think he should/could have had a bigger stage and filled it.
You can’t Glow in the Dark when there are Lights in the Sky. Kanye can suck it.

NIN blew me (and everyone else) away at Lollapalooza. I lost track of the number of people who walked away talking about their new favorite band. That shouldn’t be surprising to those of us familiar with their live show. For me the surprise was that, after catching them on several tours in a variety of venue types, they managed to wow me in a festival setting.

It’s like a whole new band. Just when you think you’ve got a handle on what’s going on during the show it morphs into something totally different. The visuals were so stunning, at moments they made me forget to sing along. I was in the second row (because I was tardy to the rail for want of seeing Saul play across the park), but the display is such that if I had been farther away I might have gotten even more out of it.

This would be the perfect tour for you to bring friends and family along to, regardless of whether or not they like NIN. So long as they’re into shiny objects - they’ll be transfixed for two hours.

Musically, NIN were in fine form. I was so overwhelmed by poly-instrumental arrangements of some of the new songs that I can’t even begin to describe how they did it. There are several bands that can rock your face off - but only one can do it with a xylophone and a straight face.

Rage Against the Machine stopped their show (the night before) at least three times to tell people to calm down and back up. However, all too many people go to festivals precisely to get drunk and go off. NIN made putting up with it worth it and dealing with it easier. The barricade area was stocked with enough water to put out a fire - so instead of killing the mood by threatening to leave the stage early, Trent was able to responsibly instigate at the right moment. He asked if everyone was alright, saw that we were, and then launched March of the Pigs.

There were the right number of my old favorites, like March of the Pigs, balanced against the newer songs throughout the set. I was stoked to hear Discipline live - Trent and Alessandro together in harmony was a high point on two distinct levels. Discipline is so fabulous live is make Only seem like a top. Speaking of Only, I was way into the brand spanking new butched up intro. I didn’t even recognize it at first, so when I finally did figure out where that beat was leading I jumped up and down with excitement like a little girl.

I wasn’t really looking forward to Lollapalloza because festivals can be such a pain in the ass. Even though you get to see several cool acts in one weekend, you have to hear a lot of not so great music along the way. It was hot and muggy and almost everything was overpriced. But, NIN delivered in a big way that made all of the annoyances seem trivial.

I have only one complaint about the NIN set. The Greater Good might as well be called The Greater Great because it’s beyond good live. The sound was crystal, Trent’s vocals were at their evocative hight and the visuals gleam with an intensity and inventiveness that make that song’s set up shine brighter than most of the others (however amazing they might be). The Greater Good live is a million watts of awesome. However... Brett should never appear in public unless he’s dancing. A stage + a great song with a smooth rhythm like that + Brett should equal some cutting edge dance moves, but it doesn’t add up that way. :( I hope it’s only because the tour is still young and he hasn’t got the hang of staying with the choreography whilst keeping the camera steady. I’m hoping it will work itself out soon.

Aside from that minor complaint, the show was super. Though I had to see NIN at a festival, I’m glad it was Lollapalooza. It was great to see my own favorite band win over a super big audience, and there was poetic symmetry in that it happened to be Lollapalooza. It was seventeen years in the making, but NIN stole the show.

I agree that 'The Greater Good' was the highlight of the show. 'Only' is a close second for me. The intensity of every song was just amazing.

I saw the bubblemen earlier in the day. I stopped by the Kidz stage before going to see Saul and some band was playing. The bubbledudes got on stage and stopped the set; the singer said, "You're looking for Love & Rockets? They'll be over that way" and pointed to the north end. Cute.:)

back in 200 the Fragility tour was my best live concert experience ever. I've seen NIN a couple times, but... well I'd all but given up hope while Mr. North was around. He just didn't fit to me. NIN was all about the details to me, and he kind of took away from that. So, I was optimistic to say the least with Robin back on board, and they didn't disappoint.
This show surpassed even the Fragility show for me, hands down. And so it goes to show that only Nin Inch Nails can out-perform Nine Inch Nails.
People bitching about a-holes in the crowd need to get over themselves though. I was in the midst of the Rage fiasco the night before, and that kind of thing is to be expected. If your weak and tiny, that's cool I guess... or your mom probably thinks so, but learn to take an elbow.
Anyways, the highlight/low-point of the night didn't come until after the show. I emptied out towards the back of the stage and saw the busses, and like three people waiting for Trent and company. So, I figured I had a couple hours to kill before I had to catch my train, so I waited too.
Now, lert me tell ya, I'm an avid musician. And while I have no desire to sound like NiN, or anyone else, his stature and work work ethic have alwasy been one of few true artistic inspirations. So, I figured I'd play the whore and try to get Trent to take a listen. But as big a whore as I am (www.myspace.com/lacklusterband) I never seem to have CD's to hand out when I need to. So, I wrote all my contact info, myspace shit, etc. on a $10 bill, and the plan was to give it to Trent as he got in the cargo van that was literally four feet away and just on the other sire of a weak ass fence. So, I waited. And Trent himself comes out. I had maybe ten seconds, and all I could muster was, "Hey Trent, $10 to hear me out. Seriously, $10 and all ya got to do is listen!"
And then it was over. He laughed and got in the van. Perhaps I should have been more clear. And more concise. Maybe sounded less like I was trying to sell him a time-share or save his soul. But whatever. It was a good idea with poor execution, and just wasn't meant to be.
If it hadn't been such a great show, I might have been more upset. But Lollapalooza was an amazing fest. Reasonable prices for such an event, plenty of shitters, and perfect weather.
And I personally enjoyed the abbreviated set. The Ghosts shit was killer, and even some of the stuff i never cared for was impressive given the unbelievably mind warping visuals. I didn't even notice his voice wasn't 100% until he mentioned. And, thank God Fink is back. Thanks for not holding a grudge Trent. That night, in that spot, the world was that much better.

First off, hats off to the promoters of Lollapaloosa, and the good people of Chicago for putting on a great festival. This was my first, and I will return in the future for more!

Mr. Reznor and company did what was expected...topped themselves once again with a fantastic set list and a mindbogglingly visual element that puts the whole show over the top. This was my 5th time having the privilege of seeing my favorite artist perform, and like a few have said before, it just gets better and better. I try to soak every song in like it is the last I'll ever hear live.

I made it up to railing on the right hand side of the stage, under the big screen. And yes that was Slash who was spotted. He walked up between the security railing and stage not more than 10 feet away from me during 'The Warning'. I wouldn't have noticed, because I love that song, until the people around me started yelling his name. He stood there for about a minute with his gf, then someone walked up to him and escorted him to a better viewing area. Section of the stage off the the side that was elevated at least 10 feet up. He stayed up there for a few songs, then I noticed him coming back down the stairs and disappearing into the backstage area. Weird...old GnR and somewhat new GnR in the same vicinity...probably swapping stories about how crazy Axl is.

And just a note to the uninitiated....PLEASE drink more water than alcohol for a festival in the middle of a midwest Summer. The sight of seeing completely limp people handed over the railing to the overworked medical staff really sucked! I hope you all are OK in the long run. I see this happen far too often at these Summer festivals, just be smart...drink the delicious water.

And to the dad that had to be passed over the railing grasping his crying 7 year old son during 'March Of The Pigs'...you should be shamed of yourself for putting that little guy through that.

Everyone around and including me seemed really exhausted by about the 6th song. A whole day walking around in the hot sun must really take its toll.

THEY PLAYED VESSEL!!!! I can't even start to tell you how excited, overwhelmed and thankful I was. There was no way to control myself at this point. I was so happy that tears were streaming down my face. Everyone else seemed to just be watching the light show, but this song was so special for me. It made the whole trip and my whole life worth living! I was screaming so loud that people were looking at me to make sure I was okay. Everyone else was quiet. Almost as if Vessel was played just for me. Those 4 minutes and 52 seconds was the happiest time of my life. It felt like the biggest high I have ever had. Time seemed to stand still; everyone in the pit seemed to freeze. Nothing mattered, everything was well. It does NOT get any better for me. It was like the orgasm of my life, the best thing that has ever happened to me in my 27 years. Just thinking about it makes me emotional. You always hear people say, "My life is now complete", but this was truly the way I felt after the song was done. I felt like everything was where it belonged, all was well, nothing left unsatisfied for unfinished. I was on top of the world, nothing could stop my euphoria.

This show was awesome, even if Trent was having voice issues. Vessel was absolutely awesome; the screens are even better live, as opposed to watching YouTube videos; and the band just rocked it. I finally got to experience the Freese Drum Machine (I last saw NIN in 05 with Alex Carapetis), and the outro he did for Piggy was phenomenal.

The crowd around me was into it, but they only really got into the well-known songs (HLAH, TL, Closer, etc.). They were still really polite and listened while the lesser-known stuff was played, but I could tell that the energy around me kinda dropped off during Ghosts and the YZ tracks. Everyone got into Hurt though, and I was happy that nobody fucked it up. We all just sang along and let Trent do his thing. ITT was definitely a highlight, and a great way to end the show, especially with each of the members leaving as they finished their respective parts, with Trent left playing the piano. It was just awesome.

I've got some photos and two one-minute long videos of Discipline and Vessel. The visuals come from one of the screens (I'm short, and we were far enough away that everyone just looks like black figures against a bright screen), so it's not really anything special, but the sound should be okay. I haven't uploaded them yet, and as soon as I do that and deem them share-worthy, I will definitely post them.
Ok my turn!! Yes, the Chicago show amazing. I've seen NIN 9 times on the 2005/2006 tours and this by far was the best one. Visually spectacular, a real experience by all means. Trent just keeps taking it up a notch on each tour and the visuals were breathtaking. The crowd was constantly whooing and aahing whenever a new screen graced the stage. It was certainly a big part of the show and helped shape the songs. I loved the Piggy version, it almost had this weird jazzy feel to it. Terrible Lie never sounded better, it was reworked and it sounded incredible. Same goes for Only, that song sounds so much better now. I was by the soundboard and the view was great. Crowd wasn't too bad, unruly at times but that is expected at an NIN show. Loved the guy in front of me, he smoked too much pot and at some point during Ghosts, he held his hands up to the sky (in a Pope like way) and closed his eyes, maybe he was having a Godlike experience but it was hilarious.

I like what Trent had to say to the crowd about playing Lolla 17 summers ago and thanking Perry for that and thanking his appreciative fans. Yes, he sounded hoarse but he also sounded grown up. This was by far the most mature NIN performance I have ever seen. Hope the tour comes back to Chicago sometime in the future, I will need to absorb it again.

i didn't see this... but that'd be pretty awesome? i'll ask friends later if they saw this message.

amazing show.

i was about 20 rows back. it was violent for only a few songs, only in the beginning... i thought the crowd was relatively tame. nothing compared to rage. i was surrounded by really nice people who were into the music... this was my first time at a festival, so i originally didn't know what to expect, but i was pleased by how kind other people were and how great the music sounded! i had a great view, and the visuals were incredible. people around me (and me too!) would flip out over the changes on the screens.

vessel, terrible lie, THE WARNING. in this twilight. yes.

trent's voice was excellent (didn't notice he was having trouble until the last songs of the show), his energy was excellent... he really pours every fiber of his heart and soul into performing, right? i don't know how they put on such a good live show every single time. was nice to hear my friends saying afterward 'now i get why you've raved about this band...'

LOVED the beginning of echoplex. so cool.

i did hear a girl say, during hurt, 'why did he say that he wrote this song and gave it away to a friend? johnny cash wrote it'...

i can't wait for august 27th.

The above was a joke, but seriously. That's not even "super fan" knowledge. If you own the Downward Spiral and read the liner notes that's some basic knowledge that's easy for a casual NIN fan of any age to pick up.

Yeah, that's not the best uniform for a NIN show, but I could see wanting to opt for a sundress to survive the hot weather for that weekend, but flip flops? Ouch.

i never ever expected to see tons of people in the pit, women in particular, wearing flip flops. i came prepared wearing my boots, since i know what to expect in the pit... and my feet got Stomped on. so i wonder how the flip floppers fared? man i can't even imagine what it would be like to have a 200lbs guy step on your exposed toes............
Same here - girls in sundresses and flip flops? I also saw quite a few dressed like that leaving during the show, with a uniform dazed look on their faces as if they'd been through a natural disaster. Is it wrong of me to find it funny? It was though. Seriously, stay away from the front of you don't know what you'll be getting into.
no kidding...... i actually told one girl that she was going to get her toes mashed in, and she said she knew.... oh well. and while i think the pit was fairly tame with only occasional slam dancing flare-ups, there was still alot of movement as a whole so i cannot imagine these girls not getting mashed up at least a little bit.......

ouchies.
I was one of the girls told about my feet, though I don't know if it was me you were talking to, or a different girl. Yes, I was aware, just not before I left the house and grabbed my sandals. I was not in a sundress. I hopped around alot, it really wasn't so bad. It was the first time I was that close to Trent at a concert, and also the first time in the pit at all. But I held my own. And BTW, the dazed look on my face was from sheer pleasure of the show, not from feeling like I survived a natural disaster.

well good. glad to hear your toes didn't get turned into an omelet. cause my feet def would have been considering the amount of times i got stepped on.

Hahah. There were astounding quantities of flip-flops in the field after the Rage show (along with a set of Sennheiser headphones and a Nokia cellphone, which I fully intend to return to whoever's got their number in the SIM card, once I get around to that.)

What about the headphones? Do they even work?

I found a new Radiohead and Black Lolla shirt in a bag when leaving the Radiohead show. I kept that shit too. Retarded ass drunk people forgetting their shit. Saved me $60. I also found ONE dollar...WHOO! Half a water!!! haha

Imagine all the stuff the people who clean up find...

I don't know.. I've been a NIN fan for a long time, and this was my first opportunity to see them live. Although their visual performance was off the chain, I have to say, the set list left something to be desired for me.

I don't see why he would decide to play any of the Ghosts collection. It's all abstract, instrumental material that is amazing when you're listening to it through a 5.1 system on your comfy chair, but when you're shoulder-to-shoulder with a bunch of pumped-up festival goers, it was a total mood killer. Same with The Greater Good. What the heck? It sounded exactly like it is on the album. Almost put me to sleep.

Most of the set, however, rocked extremely hard. Vessel was mind-blowing. Only's visuals were super cool too.

My only other beef would be the encore. Echoplex was awesome, and although I loved Hurt and In This Twilight, it didn't seem like an appropriate closing. I think I was just expecting something heavy and climactic to go out on, but it was still fun.

When I had read reviews of him playing the Ghosts,I wasn't much looking forward to it...but when I saw it live I really liked it! It's kind of like La Mer/The Frail/The mark has been made/Just like you imagined........it was beautiful.

like you said this was your first live nin experience.... if trent didn't give his fans a breather here and there... it would be simply too overwhelming. after having seen nin live 19 times i completely support the way he sets up the play list. i personally would have preferred to hear "just like you imagined" "the great below" and some other songs instead... but that is jsut personal preference....i also wish our set list would have been as long as all the other places are getting it....oh well at least i got to see the show. cant wait for next time.... 20th show.... should throw a party for that

I think In This Twilight is a pretty positive and uplifting song. Ending with Hurt is kinda dreary for me, but I was OK with ITT. HLAH has been a good closer, but it's had it's time. I doubt Chigago needed consecutive nights of people getting out of Grant park screaming "Fuck you I won't do what you tell me!" or "I'd rather die than give you control"

Oh they did, they did. It was great. Both nights! I want to do it again. RATM and NIN on consecutive nights was a dream come true.

Haha I got backstage, for free. The security people pulled me out and they were so busy with helping all the people that noone noticed us getting through that small backstage entrance...
Great show...from the back...it was unbearable from the audience

I don't post here that often (as you can tell by my post count) but I was curious what you guys thought about this interesting picture I took while at Lollapalooza.

That's from vessel, isn't it? I thought I saw some photos flash on the screen towards the end, and I was taking video, but I haven't slowed it down yet to take a look. Good catch! The first thing that crossed my mind was that it would be some GnR reference, but I guess not!

yes, agreed.

i also had flip-flops... i guess it's silly since injury to toes probably is more inconvenient than being uncomfortably hot, but wearing boots in the 90+ degree weather didn't seem like such a fun option to me. i got there at 1pm, so that probably had an effect on my decision.

i was near the front and it wasn't so bad (rage, on the other hand, i would have DIED at). i was definitely, definitely dazed after the show.

therealist -- unbearable, really? and man were you lucky, am jealous

Indeed. Our friends were at the back of the crowd (they came in late) and said that you could hear Kanye all the way to the fountain. They had to walk significantly further north to hear NIN. As they were walking in, they saw people leaving because they couldn't see/hear very well at all.

This thread... it LIVES AGAIN!!!

I just watched all of my video straight from my SD cards on my HDTV last night - I've begun working on the standard def DVD version of this for torrent. Hopefully have it up within a few weeks (I said that right after the show too, but work and school kicked my ass.)

I also noticed after Terrible Lie, Trent's left index finger was bleeding (and he was holding it out while holding the mic with the other fingers.) By the timing it looks like he sliced it while spinning that guitar off at the end of TL.

LUCKY! When I got pulled out in the beginning of MOTP they were yelling and pointing at me go get out. So I did and I spent probably 40% show trying to locate my best friend :( [who got to the side rail when I got pushed forward]. She somehow saw me and we met up again during 'Survivalism'. And KyleEasterly that sounds awesome, can't wait to see it!

I don't know if this has been posted here before, but I was looking around on Lollapalooza.com for like videos and stuff and found this video of some of the bands. It has little clips of Josh and Robin in it. Haha Josh is pretty funny. :) http://www.fuse.tv/videos/tours/lollapa ... 1713744171
