First!

If anyone saw a disheveled guy limping around in a purple dress shirt, that was me. My leg cramped up in the middle of Wish but I managed to fuel myself on adrenaline and get myself back into the crowd for the rest of the night. Feeling the pain now though. I hope I'll be able to walk tomorrow. :S

Extra-special thanks to Pragmatica (from the nin.com forums) for taking me along to "meet" Trent and company, who were all in good spirits despite our frigid Canadian weather.

I couldn't have asked for a better setlist.

This was my tenth NIN show and I couldn't have picked a better note to end on. Got off the streetcar just as Jane's Addiction finished their soundcheck. You could hear it all the way from the animal shelter across the parking lot.

Strangely, the show itself wasn't really overpoweringly loud. In fact, I thought the vocals were occasionally mixed a bit low. I guess that's a venue problem, what with the shed-like semi-outdoor acoustics, but what can you do? The lineup for Jane's fanclub presale tickets was non-existant (ehh, should have gone with that option, after all) but NIN.com's stretched a loooong way back. Good sized crowd though, and nearly everyone stayed for the entire show.

The sun didn't fully go down until NIN left the stage. Trent broke lots of microphones, knocked over the keyboards several times, ripped up a piece of the stage exposing some cables and then tripped over it. Fun! The setlist and soundcheck above is correct, but before that we also heard little bits of "Metal" and "Hurt" from outside (from either Robin or his guitar tech only) while they tweaked the guitar sound.

Street Sweeper Social Club was fantastic to see. High energy; pretty standard setlist: Fight! Smash! Win!, Somewhere In the World it's Midnight, Paper Planes, The Oath, 100 Little Curses, Promenade, Nobody Moves ('Til We Say Go). Jane's Addiction had a terrific video sequence during "Ted, Just Admit It..." with clips from Natural Born Killers. I really liked the song selection, and of course they killed each and every one of those tunes. Toronto obviously loves that band and this made their performance so very memorable. Didn't get why Perry deliberately avoided mentioning the 2003 shows at Massey Hall when he said there hadn't been a Jane's show in Toronto since 1991. Is Eric Avery's constitution really that delicate? Or was there a case of memory block?

Their setlist was: Three Days, Whores, Ain't No Right, Pigs in Zen, Then She Did, Up the Beach, Mountain Song, Been Caught Stealing, Had A Dad, Ted Just Admit It, and Ocean Size. The encore was Summertime Rolls, Stop! and Jane Says.

I hope this doesn't sound too cliched, because I mean every word: whatever this show and tour may represent for others, it also holds a lot of personal significance to me. It's been a real privilege to experience a truly profound connection with this band and the community that surrounds it. The air of finality around this tour brought a lot of things about that experience into focus for me. Not only does 2009 mark the twentieth year of NIN activity, but it's also now ten years since I became a die-hard fan, not to mention five years since I joined this board.

Over the course of all that time, I've felt overjoyed, incredibly pained, mildly relieved, vindicated, betrayed and proud to belong here. It's sad to see that the band we love is going away for a while, but you know what? It also feels like a natural move. We all have grown and changed in that time. I won't always be the same young kid I was in 1999, nascently discovering music that connected with my life, or an excitable teenager huddled over this board and sharing everything I thought with you, or the curmudgeonly twentysomething wracked with misanthropic disgust. Sometimes, listening to this music can make me feel all those ways again, but it's perpetually fleeting. There will soon be other challenges and new adventures to explore.

Life goes on and it only gets better from here! Thank you very much to everyone who has always made this community a great place to spend so much time. Everyone who shared in the humour, the excitement, the disappointment, the agony and the ecstacy of being a part of this curious phenomenon known as Nine Inch Nails. It has enriched my life in ways I can't even express.

We also heard the piano bit at the end of closer while we were outside, if we want to be really complete about it. I was only counting the songs that were performed at sound check for the "donation" people.

What an amazing show!!!!!

This was my 5th time seeing NIN and this was the best of the bunch. The set list = amazing. I was afraid they wouldn't play N.I.N + Terrible Lie because it had been played recently...but low and behold! They played it! Plus I got to hear all the songs I'd never heard live before...Mr Self Destrust, Heresy, I'm Afraid of Americans, Metal, I do not want this...I couldn't have asked for a better set list.
The sound was fantastic, the band very energetic and Trent's voice spectacular. THANK YOU for the relaxed camera policy - it's the first time I was able to snap pics of Trent + band at a NIN show. Very appreciated.
SSSC was awesome, I will definitely buy their album when it comes out in 2 weeks. Jane's Addiction was ok, it felt like all their songs sounded exactly alike...perhaps I just haven't listened to them enough to be able to appreciate their music. We left after the 4th or 5th song, mostly to beat the 'traffic'.

All in all, a fantastic evening at a great venue.

Btw, you accidentally put the fragile instead of the frail on the soundcheck, other than that you got it all right Victoly.

Oh. My. Science. What a great show with a great set list. Before the show I said that I really wanted to hear The Becoming and well... Trent must have heard that my birthday is on Friday because they played it AND Burn AND Mr Self Destruct.

this show was incredible in many ways!
setlists, all 3 bands, it really couldn't get much better imo

i was so happy I'm Afraid of Americans and Mr. Selfdestruct were played considering this was the only show i could attend on this tour.
Trent/Nails taking a break may be the right time but will still be missed.
i know over the last few years us fans have been spoiled with lots of updates, releases and tours and well, im sure this is a tough goodbye for alot of us.

before the show, i had heard very little of Street Sweeper Social Club and man!
what an enterance, what a performance!
im definitely getting their album on release day

a product of very little sleep the last couple nights

THis probably was the best altogether setlist of the tour so far, and believe me, I've been following them closely. This was, personally, my fourth Nine Inch Nails show (one from each of Fragility, Awitha Teetha, Lights in the Sky and, obviously, Wave Goodbye) and, of 19 songs, 11 were ones I'd never before seen performed. That alone was worth the ordeal that is suffering through "The Hand That Feeds," which is the single Nine Inch Nails song I don't care for and, admittedly, sort of rocked live.

The crowd, sadly, was by and large catatonic. It was eerie, but I sort of expected it: I don't know what it is about that city, but every time I catch a show there, the crowd is immobile and almost melanchoic. RJD2 almost stormed out on his set there once because no one would dance--even after he repeatedly implored them to. I was stuck in the 300s--not the nosebleeds, but neither the good seats nor the pit and I find myself regretting the fact that I didn't bring cash to work a scalper over for a better (and warmer) section. The people surrounding me were dead silent, arms crossed, and didn't even sway. I seemed to be the only one singing along.

Perhaps it had something to do with the fact that every single fucking person was smoking weed, pretty much chain smoking joints for the duration of the event. I wondered why no one was doing anything about it, when I remembered that that's no longer a big deal in Toronto (Canada, at large?). It eventually became a bit annoying, as I don't smoke anymore. And because I blame its sedative effects for deadening what otherwise might have been a good crowd--they came alive for "Head Like A Hole."

Speaking of which, the highlights: I have to agree with everyone else who's commented on this tour that, somehow, "Head Like A Hole" was truly exceptional. I've seen the song enough (I'd thought); I've long-since quit spinning it at home (it was in heavy rotation for over a decade, let it be); I thought I'd rather have some rarity in its place. But truth be told, it was awesome--or maybe that was just because that was the moment where every neophyte and casual fan got his or her groove back and I felt, for a split second, that connection that makes communal concert attendance such a glorious thing. The opposite of loneliness. Whatever.

Otherwise: "Mr. Self-Destruct" blew me away and took me totally by surprise. I actually scared the chick next to me when I screamed, "Get the fuck out!" when I realized what T.R. was queuing up. It was so late in the set that I'd given up hope for anything but "Physical" or "Reptile" (both of which would have been welcome, but I've wanted to see "Self-Destruct" since May of 1994 and have never had the opportunity). The track is intense live.

I was enthralled with and ecstatic over "The Becoming," "Heresy," "Metal," "The Way Out Is Through" and "I Do Not Want This," of course, but I was especially taken aback by "I'm Afraid of Americans"--I can't believe how much that song sounded like it was Reznor's to begin with. "Metal" and "Physical" were transformed by T.R. into something other, by which process of metamorphosis, he claimed ownership of them--he made them his own. But "Americans" seemed, in its original (alright, remixed) version to have been his all along. It was sublime.

I"d have killed for "Banged and Blown Through"; I agree with the Pitchfork reviewer who said, "I'm still not convinced that it's not actually Trent Reznor singing on this track." That song makes my personal Desert Island 100 (at least) and it'd have been a pleasant surprise. But one cannot have everything, I suppose.

I can't make it to the Massachussetts show--the originally scheduled 3 June Darien Lake show was in my hometown so I'd have been able to swing that one. So I'm worried about tomorrow's setlist. I am tragically disappointed that I didn't catch "Last" or "Somewhat Damaged." Both of these were my "I-Can-Now-Die-Happy" ideals--alongside of the less probable "Lights in the Sky," "We're in This Together" and "Adrift and at Peace"; alongside of the entirely improbable "I'm Looking Forward to Joining You, Finally," "All the Love in the World" and "And All That Could Have Been." If they pop up tomorrow, I'll cry.

I tried to make the soundcheck, but thanks to Toronto's construction-addled rush hour Gardiner Expressway, I instead spent an extra hour in the car, pissing into a Vitamin Water bottle and on the shins of my jeans. Thanks, Ontario Highway Authority! But, thanks to you helpful souls here on ETS, at least I know I didn't miss a soundchecking of, say, "The Perfect Drug" or anything. I'd have liked to catch "Home" and "The Good Soldier" very much--and very, very much more than pissing on my jeans--but these I can live without.

That concludes my review. The bullet points one should take away from it are as follows:

1. Amazing setlist.
2. Lousy, zombie-like crowd.
3. Ontario's infrastructure could use some work or at the very least a bloody port-o-john.

Agreed with the zombie crowd. Why they even bother trying to enforce a no-smoking policy in the lower bowl at the Molson Ampitheatre is beyond me. People just kept smoking as soon as the security folks turned their backs, and it seemed like all I was doing all night was trying to look around the folks and their entourage of nagging security guards who were constantly walking around through the crowd, smoking and being asked to stop smoking!

As the night progressed, it seemed to get only worse. Young couples kept shuffling through the crowd, everyone spilling their two beers, smoking, taking pictures, and stepping on my feet.

Frankly, I preferred seeing shows in an arena. At least everyone who has a seat tends to stay put!

Agreed that both SSSC and JA both ripped it up last night. I left after Been Caught Stealing, as I needed to get home for work on Wednesday, but all in all, it was a decent evening.

In a perfect world, NIN's set would have been delayed by 30-45 minutes, to take advantage of the darkness. JA's light show added a lot to their performance, and NIN could have benefitted likewise.

First of all...FUCKING AMAZING SHOW. Second of all....FUCK YOU TO THE SECURITY AND OPP WHO HAD NOTHING BETTER TO DO THAN HARASS PEOPLE WHO JUST WANTED TO ENJOY WHAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN THE BEST NIN CONCERT IN TORONTO EVER. And with that being said, thank you to Trent and co. for putting on a solid performance of my favourite songs. Now I'm Nothing, Heresy, Mr. Self-Destruct, I Do Not Want This, Terrible Lie, Burn, Wish...and it goes on and on. Thank you to Jane's Addiction and Street Sweeper Social Club for a full night of good music, energy and awesomeness. And last but not least...A BIG FUCK YOU TO THE MOLSON AMPHITHEATER SECURITY AND FUCK YOU OPP FOR BEING THE BIGGEST FUCKING ASSHOLES OF THE YEAR. WAY TO FUCKING RUIN AN OTHERWISE GREAT NIGHT. ASSHOLES!

That show was absolutely amazing.

SSSC first made a definite impression, they were on fire. Better than I expected them to be.

NIN was awesome, I so wanted the NIN opener, and got it. And it only got better from there.

The crowd in the pit was (relative to other NIN shows I've been to) quite tame too, which was nice, I wasn't in the mood for too much pushing & shoving last night.

Janes was good too, but they weren't the highlight.

i loved the show even though i felt the setlist was a bit predictible after seeing the setlists from the previous shows on this tour. i've also seen now i'm nothing/terrible lie intro far too many times. i really wanted something different like when a previous city got pinion/wish as an opener.

that all being said...nin were in fine form and put on a stellar show and by the time head like a hole started i felt sad that a) the set was almost over and b) that this would be last time i'll see nin for a while.

i was in the 300's and our section was up and dancing and singing all through out nin. in fact, from where i could see, the crowd was quite into it which is unusal for toronto crowds. t.o. crowds are always quite reserved.

as for the venue, it was the most lax i've ever seen security there which was nice. usually it's like a nazi camp.

sssc were o.k. not really my thing.

jane's were fantastic, i've seen them several times beofre and while they don't have the energy that they used to, they are playing better than ever. and as much as media/douchebag dave navaro is, the man can play.

i still wish NIN had played last.

I had such a fucking awesome last NIN concert experience. This brings my final count to 6, and I have to say this was the one where everyone seemed to be having the most fun. The pit was perfect - not too rough or tame. However, I STILL have not met any ETSers over the years, sad.

I did hear The Wretched during soundcheck, though I'm not sure what else was played. I was hoping to hear Last, The Day The World Went Away, and The Downward Spiral, but what are you going to do. I'm happy with what we got.

Since there were so many donors at this show, finding the right line was a ridiculously hard task! There were so many people already there when we arrived at 3. I overheard a security guard say some people spent the night in line waiting..?

Trent did not say much to us, other than introducing I'm Afraid of Americans as a song he did with Bowie, and then saying "Goodbye," at the end of the night after Hurt. His mic didn't work at one point, so he threw a customary hissy fit.

SSSC was amazing as well. It was a privilege to watch Tom and his insane guitar playing up close. He even played the guitar with his teeth (or tongue?). They covered M.I.A.'s Paper Planes, and said it was on the upcoming album (I think). I loved hearing them.

I'm got home early because I really had no desire to see Jane's Addiction (sorry!)

Fantastic show, but the crowd sucked. I have a couple of theories, but the bulk of it is that everyone there appeared to be way too uptight. I've seen NIN 5 times, 4 of which were in Toronto .... and all of the shows in TO had a pathetic crowd. However, the crowd rocked when I saw them in London.

Amazing set list though. The only thing missing was Down In It?

And does anyone mind filling me in on what was up with the OPP?

Show was good. I think i liked the mix in the 2006 show a bit better. you could hear trents vocals a bit more at the amphitheatre, than this show. I guess different sound engineers. A bit let down that they played home and the wretched during sound check and thus not during the show. also really wanted to see the downward spiral. That said we got some good songs so it worked out. I have to say though, last 3 songs... really didnt care for. Head like a hole and hurt i guess personally i dont care about. and he played survivalism so the hand that feeds to me felt a bit redundant.

janes addiction was great, but i felt like they could have turned the volume down a tad. I almost feel like both bands could have done with taking some of the high end out of the electric guitars, but maybe thats just me.

Best set list of the tour I think.

I cried when Now Im Nothing started playing.

It would have been perfect if they played the Piggy Remix but whatever.

The only problem i found with NIN live over the years is that theres so much playing to a click track that you never get that free flowing burtst of adrenaline from the band that youd get playing to a natural tempo... But i guess thats would defeat the point on 90% of nin songs.


Jane's Addiction blew me away. I liked them alot before but seeing them live last night made me love them. I understand why they closed the night.

What an incredible show. I still can't get over how amazing the setlist was and just the overall intensity of the performance. 6th NIN show I've been to and this and the last were definetly the best two of all. Lights in the Sky tour for an unequalled overall experience, both in visuals and audio, and now Wave Goodbye tour for the unreal setlist, unlike anything I could have asked for.

It's my birthday on Friday as well and I feel the same way. To be able to go to a 6th NIN show and still come out hearing nearly half a set of songs I'd never seen performed live before is amazing. Becoming has long been one of my favourite songs and as the name suggests Mr. Self Destruct as well and I had managed to never see either of those performed before. Add Metal, I Do No Want This, Heresy and I'm Afraid of Americans to that and I was very blown away by the way Trent really played this show for the die-hard fans, choosing even to forego the staple in Closer to make room for the songs we all wished we could have heard but never did before.

Lasting impression is that this was an incrediblely satisfying way to see NIN go out (for now at least) I just wish that they were playing back to back shows because I would be in front of the Amphitheatre right now buying scappled ticks to tonights show if I had the chance.

Street Sweeper sounded good, what I managed to catch after taking way too long to walk there, and Janes was also good. Didn't know much Janes going in (Been caught Stealing and Jane Says obviously, as well as Stop! and of course Mountain Song due to Guitar Hero ) but what I saw I really enjoyed. Unfortunatly as has been mentioned security were not in a good mood and I got the boot a little over halfway into Janes' set (somehow related to security coming up and taking a joint out of my hand, meh).

Botley said it best on the last page, and much more eloquently than I would, so on the subject of the music I defer to him and will say only that it was an awesome night.

On a personal note:
I don't know where this bitching about the zombie crowd is coming from. I was front and centre and everywhere I looked people were into it for all three bands.

Security was the tamest I have seen it at the Ampitheatre in a long time.

Despite chatting to lots of people and remaining vigilant looking for those I might recognize from pictures posted here, I managed not to meet a single other ETS'er, at least not knowingly. Although I think I saw Swindley in the back of the pit, slightly left of centre, wearing wicked cool sunglasses and rocking out to SSSC.

All in all a great night and a fitting end to this phase of my experiences with NIN live.

That was my experience on the floor. With NIN it was largely the "pushing to the front and crowding everyone" thing going on, so maybe not a lot of typical moshing, but that was happening too in some areas.

Yeah, I got pushed around like crazy. I don't know where this 'zombie crowd' was, but it certainly wasn't anywhere near me. I got destroyed.

With regards to the show... The setlist was amazing, NIN was solid, everyone around me was screaming out the lyrics like crazy... Everything just kind of fell into place. Absolutely perfect show from my perspective.

Wow. No other words to describe that. Reminded me of seeing them back in '95. Gritty, aggressive and so fucking great! The setlist had a flow and a crazy intesity to it. Special night indeed!

To the crowd of people that were between Robin and Trent about 7 people deep. Didn't catch any of your names but you surely rocked out. The two guys with shaved heads in green tour shirts, the guy in glasses with the curly faux hawk, the girl in pink and black sleeves, the girl in the red tour T, the girl that helped me block out so some guy could tie his shoe between songs and the others in the bunch that I can remember a distinguishing comment - great times! Good mix of old school mosh and respect. I was that tall guy, shaved head, goatee, black T, grey sleeves. You all helped make last night even better - a sincere thanks... Except for the guy who made the phone call during hurt and yelled over the phone how he was "30 feet from the singer whos playing a slow song" Seriously man, WTF....

meeting the band was an awesome experience, though the fact that we could only take a group picture with the band was kinda lame. i was set to get my picture taken right next to Trent, but then some girl snuck her way in between us!

the show was one of my best nin shows. the only thing that was bad is the crowd, every one was talking, shaking hand, walking between seats. Nobody was really into the show. For that reason, arena show are better than at this place, but its only my point of view.

i never tought that they would play "Now i'm nothing" 2 times in a row. WOWWW it was amazing!!

Does enyone heard about a HD full version of the show? I hope someone filmed it all at good quality!!!

I said "just a minute" and he was like, whatever, and then just stood in front of me. I had been at the park since 10 am and this cock smoker was so fucking rude. I'm considering not releasing the audio or video just because of how fucking fucked he was. fuck you again

amazing show. i was back on the left side of the stage, along the rail. couple crazy people in the crowd but not much.

too much smoke during the show, made it hard to see band members.

I have to say as well this was an awesome show!
Finally after 7 shows I got to see my favourite NIN song live, the becoming. Kinda sucked being far back in the 400's but at least I was there.
I recorded all of NIN's set in HD except for most of the fragile because I realized my battery wasn't going to last the whole show. It ended up being a good decision because I only had 2 minutes left of battery time when it ended. I will get the recording out soon enough.
One more thing, if this was my last NIN concert, thank you Trent for all the memories!

Yes _ the zombie crowd. i was in the pit maybe about 10 rows back. I could see everyone up front tearing it up- I so wanted to be up there. But no, i got stuck behind the everyone just standing there not even bobbing a head, spilling beers more worried about taking pictures than actually seeing the show. wtf- im sure enough people will have HD recordings here- arghh.i swear, maybe it was all the pot and those people were too stoned to move!

and speaking of the pit, I got to the point that these boring people in front of me were pissing me off by just ruining the mood- so I decided wtf, i might as well go to the back rail of the pit. and proceeded to almost get nailed by the mad puker- assfuck running thru the back and was puking 3 or more times by the time he got out, and then got nailed by security. It happened so fast i hadnt even realized he had puked practically on the guy in front of me- i would have wanted to punch the fucker , but then i didnt want to get thrown out too. and how bout those drains backing up for the Janes show? trying to clean the floors? lol.

Otherwise I absolutely loved the set list for NIN and to hear now im nothing/terrible lie for possibly the last time- was fun to see TR tearing up the stage.
Loved SSSC- never thought I would have liked them before; would definitely see them again if they come around-
And Janes- awesome to watch Perry's Prancing ! And Dave spent alot of time stage right - at which point i was only 1 row back from rail. i walked away when they were done thinking I have just witnessed some legendary performances- wasnt too into them when they were around in the 90's, so I felt i got a last chance to see them! And whoever says Perry's voice wasnt up to par- i thought he was hitting the notes pretty clearly-

all in all an excellent day- I will miss Nine inch nails when they go on "hiatus" but thats ok- got to see them one last time.

Eh, whatever. I was in the 300s as well (sec 303), Row F, right on the aisle. I stood there all night.. probably even crossed my arms once or twice. Big deal. I'm just not that kind of person who gets really into it and dances and sings along (except in my head where I kind of rehearse the lyrics a bit as the show goes on, hah). I guess you could say I'm a bit boring, but don't think for a second that I wasn't having a great time. The show was fucking amazing. Wonderful set, way more than I ever expected. Just because I'm maybe a little shy doesn't mean I wasn't into it, 'cause I was loving every second of it.

A big thanks to Trent for the great seats. Dead centre, not too far back. Also thanks for the backstage passes, despite the fact that I didn't put them to good use as I had hoped. Oh well, not necessarily my fault no one knew where I was supposed to go.

Felt like the setlist alienated a lot of the casual fans. Nobody understood what was happening during The Becoming hahaha.

I was blown away though. Jumped around and screamed at the top of my lungs during the entire show... Even though I had that terrible cold.

Metal which I am not of huge fan of on record really came out as an highlight. It's the closest thing to the Year Zero segment from the LITS tour on NIN/JA. Really cool electronic outro with Trent jamming on his sequencer.

The Becoming (one of my all time fav NIN songs), I Do Not Want This, The Fragile and Mr. Self Destruct were my other highlights.

Reaaally great not to be able to predict the setlist... I really wasn't expecting Mr Self Destruct to pop up so late in the set and with Trent being totally pissed off by technical issues, it felt like the whole place was on fire.

I concur with this. I was in 305, and while things looked pretty crazy down front up near the stage, everywhere around me most folks were just standing and perhaps nodding their heads a little bit. People seemed to really go insane when Jane's came on though. Maybe I was sitting amidst a lot of Jane's fans?

Also, great big 'fucking shut up' to the assbag behind me who thought he'd make a witty joke at the end of every fucking song, and chainsmoke joints one after another, non fucking stop.

Was great to hear I'm Afraid of Americans, Now I'm Nothing and Metal, among others. Never thought I ever would. TR's taking some great big chances and they're all paying off, every last one.

How is Mr. Self Destruct not a show staple? That shit is incredible live. So much energy.

Was it me or was Trent doing a strange sort of swaying dance with a water bottle near his groin at the beginning of one song? Forgetting which. I know that sounds exceedingly bizarre, but I couldn't tell what the hell he was doing from my angle.

It was bloody exhausting carpooling to TO from Montreal and back, and work today was exhaustion-filled hell, but so very, very worth it.

All this talk of the Toronto crowd being "catatonic" shows a real lack of understanding of Canadian music fans. Basically it's this: they like to really focus on the music and experience of the presentation. They can be a more discerning, critical audience. Fakers quickly get weeded out. The great ones are revered. No, I didn't jump around like some idiot either, I took in the musicianship and the great show. Does that mean I appreciated it any less? Absolutely fucking not. The place didn't pretty much sell out for no reason at all. Perhaps the T.O. crowd didn't hop around like a bunch of crazed fools, but they sure put their money where their mouth is. In a town that has supported 3 NIN shows in one year in this economy, that speaks louder than anything.

Oh, and a great show by all three bands. Pretty much perfect.

Before I forget, thanks to whoever suggested "The Brazen Head" pub - outstanding little watering hole, eh?! If I ever catch another show at the MA, I'll definitely pre-drink again at the "The Brazen Head".

xvanx is right - I understand wandering around munching pizza before the show. Maybe even during SSSC, if they're not your thing. But, during the NIN set?!

This sort of thing just doesn't seem to happen as much during an arena show, does it?

All in all, still a great evening. Good times.

I figured I'd let the show sink in for a good 24 hours before posting. Some quick thoughts:

1. Best set list I've ever personally seen. Hands down.

2. Tight show without a full-time keyboardist. I miss Alessandro as a person, but the band doesn't miss him on the beeps and boops (sorry, Daphne!)

3. From my vantage point (side stage) the crowd did look tame, which was especially evident during the harder/thrashier songs like Mr. Self Destruct. However, they made up for a lack of physical outbursts with vocal outbursts, which is often more energetic.

4. SSSC was the best openers I've seen with NIN (Yes Dave, Saul was good too).

5. I have a great deal of respect for Trent and the guys for making time to see over 600 donors before yesterday's show. I don't even know when they had time to eat and prepare for their set, as they were still seeing people during SSSC. You guys really know how to treat your fan base with the utmost care, and a lot of younger bands should take notes.

5. Big thanks to Dave, Holly, Scott, Craig, Rebecca, Trish, Brigid, Jennifer and of course Mira for making the concert the highlight of my summer.

Oh what a glorious show! Wonderful wonderful setlist. My memory is bad after shows and others are more eloquent, but musical heaven ensued in many numbers. The Fragile, The Becoming, I Do Not Want This were high points for me. Loved Metal. TR falling - wow. He dropped like a tree and I can't even remember what song it was now, but he caught on something on the floor.

As for the crowd not 'into it', I don't know - the guy next to me was. The people in the pit in front looked pretty lively. Not everyone enjoys in the same way. The couple in front of us did a lot of talking and the girl was doing the dance girls do when they can't dance. Whatever. I could see over their heads. 3rd row of seats in 202 - very very lucky and awesome seats.

edit again - I liked NIN in daylight. I wonder if TR wanted to be able to see everyone for once with it being the last tour.

edit - just came back to mention border crossings and saw NINisamazing's post vvvvvv - apparently the U.S. side has roadblocks when you are LEAVING now - it happened last month at the Prescott/Ogdensburg bridge too. You pull up (on the U.S.side) and they ask you (this is on the U.S.) side where you're going, are you bringing $$, etc., the things you're used to being asked when you ENTER a country, not leaving your OWN. They asked me to pop the trunk - fine, but then I heard them zip open our suitcases without asking. Was kind of weird.

Well, It was a sweet show, from what I saw...But I had problems..And my day was fucked up royally.

We fucking had a nightmare of a time going into Canada..
We left buffalo at 3:30 (it takes 2 hours to get there), we got searched going into Canada. Really for no real reasons. All of us were reasonably law abiding citizens, with a pretty clean criminal record. But they made our time hell regardless. Im not the kinda person that likes to make these claims, but i really feel like they were profiling us, there was 5 males in the car, all in their early to mid twenties. It was a diverse group ethnically/racially too. Some of us are not really "clean cut", I guess we did fit huge generalizations..but We didnt act at all susipicious of anything, we were completely honest and forward. We told them we were just going to a concert in toronto, and that was all, which was true. They even tried to trick us into admitting to something

"So you were doing drugs today? Me: No, sir(which is true), Border guy: well your friend said two of you were smoking pot.. Me: well, thats not true, i did not, sir. Border guys: You know admiting to this wouldnt get you into trouble, you guys are young and you are going to a show. Me: I have nothing to admit too, sir. I didnt do anything..."

Which is fucking bullshit that they even asked this that, because we had no pot or anything in the car or on our person..

Pretty much he made up things to try to arrest us, he even made up stories saying my friend was smoking pot with us, which wasnt even true, and my friend didnt even say that. It was a lie. They were searching for problems, they wanted to arrest us, but they realized they had nothing. We had NOTHING in the car that would lead to this. I am really surprised that this happened, Because one of my friends went to toronto for a show like 2 weeks ago, and my other friend goes into Canada for work twice every week..
I have never had this happen to me. And I probably wont go to Canada for a while now, not after last night. It was just too ridiculous and unneccary. Just a bunch of asshole on a power trip..

It took 2hours and 30 minutes plus to actually get through the border, we didnt finally get through untill 6.

We ended up missing the first bunch of tracks of the NIN set (I came in during the end of MOTP, we missed the NIN intro-terrible lie, and heresy), Which was a dissapointment, my favorite band, heresy is one of my favorite songs, and this is going to be trents last tour, not to mention this was the only show i could go too. So yeah, fuck me...

The performances were amazing from what i saw, JA was really really sick.

but that whole thing kinda ruined the day. it just gave it a bad vibe.
SO its really hard for me to say how amazing the show was, because my group (well, what was left) was kinda in a shitty mood. It was cool to see metal, the becoming, I do not want this, Im afraid of americans..
I missed some of Mr self destruct because I had to piss really really bad, to the point i felt like my blatter was going to burst. It was hard to have fun. There was so much bullshit that happened tues that I couldnt think about even having fun...


I also couldnt sell the extra tickets i had to these two dudes who were interested. So I got stuck with them..


I guess it could of been worst, but i think thats a bad way of looking at things considering it shouldnt of happened like this to begin with.

Another great NIN show, wish there was more of a light show like the Hamilton/Toronto shows, playing with the sun out would not work. But the set list was great; Mr. Self-Destruct was a great song. In the pit the bass on I'm Afraid of Americans was so deep and/or loud that I could really feel it in my chest. Out of the 3 shows I’ve seen this tour, this was the best musically.

Street Sweeper Social Club were also great, was unsure what to except. I was afraid that the band was depend on Tom, and he would be more or less the front man, but this was not the case. I know nothing of their music, but really enjoyed what I heard. Paper Planes was done well, I’m also a fan of M.I.A. her 1st album is quite political.

I’m a real big fan of Jane’s Addiction, been into them before Nothing’s Shocking. Never seen JA before, have seen Porno for Pyros at the Eden Musicfest, back in the 90’s. Imho JA almost stole the show. Great set, even Perry’s voice only messed up once in the beginning. Hell I even danced a little during JA set.

I’m unsure how those in the seats/grass area responded to the show. From what I saw in the ‘pit’ most people where into the whole show. People should remember that Trent is in his mid 40’s and Perry in his 50’s, some people showing up to the concert will not be in their teens or early 20’s. My energy level is not what it was 20 years ago, so how I enjoy NIN’s may differ a little from someone 25 years younger than me. Despite my age I was into the whole show. The combination of NIN/JA, musically for me this was one of my best concerts ever.

Also, I was asked for ID three times after picking up my pre-sale tickets. I guess I look to old to have pre-sale tickets. The third time I was becoming upset, who cares what I do with my tickets. It’s my choice to sell or attend the event. Not that I would ever sell my NIN ticket!

Snark, I just have to say that I appreciate your interpretation of the "catatonic" crowd. As someone in their 30s, I'm not much of a jumper/mosher/dancer - it makes me feel weird, like I'm trying to recapture my youth or something lol. It definitely does NOT mean that I am not a huge fan, though (although I became a fan a bit late in the game, I've caught every show in Toronto from the '05 Kool Haus club show to this one, and I will continue to support TR & the band if/whenever they decide to come back). That said, I am a bit of a head-bopper, so I guess I score half a brownie point...

All in all, it was a great night out - I absolutely loved SSSC's set and it was a treat to see Jane's. I just wish it was warmer out :(

What an amazing show it was! I enjoyed it as much as I enjoyed the LITS show in Montreal last November.

While waiting in the mega line for entry (I didn’t have a presale ticket so I had to go through the general entry), I got to hear SSSC. I’m sorry I didn’t have the chance to see them but I loved what heard! I’m getting their album for sure. Passing security was easy; I showed them my camera and the security lady searched my purse; then I made my way to my seat. I was in section 304, row E. I was two rows after a red “special guests” box, which turned out to be a nightmare. More about that later.

I quickly realized that I was too far to take good pictures. I took some anyway but I’m not showing them (except for one that will come later); they are exceptionally bad! They are still precious to me because it’s a reminder that I was there. The distance ruined them but also the smoke: both the one coming from the stage and the one coming from the spectators. Yep! It was another great night of second hand pot smoking for me! I’m not complaining, mind you; except maybe for the fact that it made for shitty pictures!

About NIN: what can I say that hasn’t already been said? I do believe that it was one of the strongest setlist yet. I mean Heresy, Metal, The Becoming and motherfucking Mr Self Destruct! I cannot complained about that, can I? Heresy live blew my mind. What a powerful song! And how incredibly beautiful was The Fragile? That whole setlist was like a wave of intense emotional experience after another. No time to recover either. It was absolutely mind blowing! I don’t expect to see something like that again in my lifetime. And since I am a pussy, I did cry during Hurt. It’s funny because I don’t really care for the song anymore when it comes to play on my iPod. But I’ve seen it played live twice now and both time the song have had a very deep emotional impact on me. And then Trent just said “goodbye” and raised his hand and walked away. Well boss, I did not say goodbye back and I refuse to do it. I don’t believe for one second that this is the last that I’ve seen of Nine Inch Nails.

Speaking of Trent, he was in a great shape! His voice was so much better than it was in Montreal last November. Very powerful and without any hesitation in it. Robin seemed to be better: he was all over the place. Justin seemed to have fun too. And Ilan? Boy does he ever bang those drums of his! I don’t think I’ve ever heard drums so loud before. And I did enjoy his performance a lot; the kid has a lot of talent.

The only thing that made the show less enjoyable for me were the assholes in the “special guests” box in front of me. I constantly had my view blocked because these idiots were obviously there to see how many beers they could drink in one night. They kept calling the waitress over and over again… During Jane’s, the beer finally took effect and they began behaving like they were in the pit: head butting, kicking one another… security came in to remove one of them who had more than enough of his share of beer ( and other substances) and luckily, some of his buddies followed him. I got to enjoy the rest of Jane’s more quietly.

I knew I would love NIN but I didn’t anticipate enjoying Jane’s Addiction as much as I did. I knew I would like them but I ended up having almost more fun watching them then I did NIN! NIN was about being on an emotional train ride and Jane’s turned out to be about enjoying damn good music, dancing and having a great time. Maybe the second hand pot smoking was really getting to me but I had a blast when I noticed Dave’s Barbie doll on stage! And Dave Navarro is indeed a fantastic guitar player. The guy is absolutely amazing and he plays a mean, brick shitting guitar. Also, I must confess that I am now totally in love with Perry Farrell. What a remarkable front man. What an amazing voice! It was pure delight watching him strut his stuff on stage. I loved Jane’s so much that at one point, I told myself: “damn I wish these guys could get along so they could produce more music together!” To those who are planning to leave after NIN for the upcoming shows I have this to say: you are damn fools if you do and you’ll miss something you’re not likely to see anywhere else!

I definitely did have the time of my life at that show. I have a lot more to say about my trip to Toronto but it’s for a couple other threads. And this is the only pic that is the less shitty amongst those I took; it’s of the start of Jane’s performance and it was of the images that were projected on the screen at the front of the stage:

I think it kind of has a dreamy quality to it... maybe I'm still under the influence of the second hand pot smoking though.

I had to pee really really bad, so bad i felt survere pain. (I blame it on the border delay, partly) and I went during survivalism, Missed the first 30 seconds of MSD..

But yeah, fuck me..

I has pictures! I'm in the process of uploading them to my flickr account (which will be in no particular order, since I renamed them and therefore don't remember the original order) so I can add them to the nin.com stream. They're not the greatest, because I was a bit of a distance away from the stage. Not as far as our baby otter, marodi, but far enough to where I had to switch the conversion lens mode from wide to tele. And I also had quite a few drunkards in front of me. (One pretty much fucked my recording of Metal.) But I have to say I did pretty freakin' good, considering that I took about 60 pictures and 13 of each band turned out well enough to crop, touch up and post. I consider anything over 5 a fucking miracle.

Also got four videos, two NIN (Metal [as stated], and I'm Afraid of Americans), and two of Jane's (Mountain Song and Jane Says). Didn't want to get Jane Says, I originally wanted to record Whores. But I started recording and realized I was still in wide lens mode and couldn't switch without having to interrupt the recording. So I fell back on Jane Says. And granted, I'm not completely happy with how Metal turned out, but I'm going to upload it anyway just because it was my first recording that I've kept. (Recorded The Frail into Closer during the Oakland show last year, but it was so bad that I got rid of it.)

I was very impressed with the set. I went with mercurynin, and according to her, Toronto's set whooped the Detroit setlist's ass. I was ecstatic to get the two songs I recorded, as they're some of my favorites. I was thrown off by The Way Out Is Through, didn't recognize it at first. And I thought I was initially wrong about Heresy, but I wasn't. Would have loved to recorded it, but security came over to our row because of some guys next to us, so I missed the chance. And I like that I got to use Mr. Self Destruct as a means of jealousy. I sent a txt to a friend, and he went " YOU FUCKING BITCH." And I also wish I had gotten Trent falling on stage, 'cause that was laughs all over. I guess I got a little spoiled by the tours last year because I was hoping for a little bit of theatrics, but of course, there were none. I'm not complaining though. I was in conflict with Trent's "Goodbye" onstage. God dammit, I'm not accepting any finality until that last show! That even goes with the merch. All the merch stating "Wave Goodbye" and "1989 - 2009" were depressing. Pick up the NIN/JA 2009 shirt with the dates and cities on the back.

I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed Jane's Addiction. I hope they managed to stay together after these tours and do another smaller tour. I would love to get a photo pass and take some better photos. Perkins was nuts, at one point he was drumming so hard I could feel my entire body vibrating heavily. (For that matter, Rubin did the same thing at one point.) I liked watching Perry onstage. And because of him, I'm now calling Scott Weiland a poser because it seems he got some of his stage moves from Perry. (A few, not all.) And Dave...um....yeah....it should be illegal for someone to be that hot. Just sayin'!

And a little random tidbit: Mercurynin and I left for Toronto on Monday afternoon. She decided to hit the border crossing up in Port Huron, because there's not as much traffic as in Detroit, and it made the whole trip faster. We get to the border, they ask their questions: How long are you staying, state the purpose, etc. We mention the concert, they ask who. We say NIN. The lady goes "Oh! They just came through here a couple of hours ago. Everyone was going nuts." That just kind of made us smile a bit. And wonder. I mean, Detroit's closer to Clarkston than Port Huron is, would have made more sense to take the Ambassador Bridge over to Canada. But hey, great minds think alike!

My apologies to everyone if me and my friends and my brother were being weird at the show but this was THE BEST FUCKING SHOW I'VE EVER BEEN TO! Every act was fucking brilliant! I finally saw nin with my dream setlist and Street Sweeper kicked my ass left and right to the fact that my brother decided to go and get water hehe.

A guy was crowd surfing during nin and decided to get off in the front few rows. As soon as he was TRYING to get down, me and a couple of people grabbed him. He yells "NO! I Wanna go down!" and we kept on laughing and nodding no. Everyone then tries to push him out and finally security grabs him by his pants and pulls him out of the crowd. So awesome!

Oh and I had a moshpit right behind me. It was so fucked up (in a good way). I was broken, bruised, forgotten, sore by the end of the tour (puns intended).

my 8th and final show (hopefully not but who knows).

i have to admit as much as it was not really a factor in other shows i was really hoping for a homerun setlist wise for this show and had been watching for weeks. i think they more than delivered for us and that made things all the more special.

the buffalo news said "think of canada as a foreign country now" and well they treated us like foreigners this time around, very clearly profiling.

street sweeper didn't impress me much with their maoist/marxist-leninist ranting. i like the coup and rage but morello when given a bit of a leash is brutal. the band reminded me of a diluted version of both bands the all stars came from because they have this angry take on the power message but say very little towards it and lyrically are very lacking past trying to be a bad ass on stage. i'd be more interested to see if any of them are actually involved in the struggle they wave the flag for.

Nine Inch Nails never disappoints, any day you get to see them is a good day, this was no expection. it was sdefinitely strange seeing them open for someone though. regardless hearing now i'm nothing (a song i knew about but did not actually hear until this tour started) was definitely a treat, it doesn't fit a lot of NIN recordings but for a live show it fits well.

i really felt like this show was the best possible show i could have hoped for, i held out hope to hear big man with a gun and maybe to even hear reptile once again but honestly considering what we did hear, how could you complain?

i didn't expect it but i teared up a little during the becoming. even though i've always been slightly annoyed by the overhyped nature of hurt it did hit me it was the last time i would see it live and that it was most likely the last song, that was a tough one to get through. i only really say this because honestly NIN has been a great experience and its the end of an era concert wise. hell i'm 24 right now god only knows when if ever they'll tour again, or what i'll be doing at the time. those things combined with the great memories of the last 8 shows and the times i've had with people seeing them and listening to NIN myself really just came crashing down on me during hurt, it made me tear up but they were all happy memories and i guess i just felt happy to be there at that moment in time and to have had the opportunity to experience all of those good things.

i know NIN is just a band but its a band that has been good to its fans, a setlist like the one we got in toronto shows that fan input on some level was considered and that was a way to give back. i hope everybody has had as fun of a ride as i have through NIN and i can't wait for the next album (at least we still get those).

jane's addiction was pretty good, i really like nothing's shocking but can't say i'm much of a fan of everything else. they've always been on my list of bands to see live and with the package of NIN last show it was worth it, had i saw them any other one (headlining or at a festival) i think i would've felt differently or been slightly disappointed. not a bad show just sort of hard to pay attention to them fully after being destroyed by the NIN pit.

There was a guy in section 202, Row C, probably around seat #20, who had what looked to be a pretty good camera. I think he filmed all three bands from a great vantage point - everytime I looked over he was holding that camera dead steady. Our section was, amazingly enough, devoid of screamers, so I would think he got some decent audio, too.

If he's on here, or anybody here knows him, I'd love to get a copy of his footage. I should have talked to him at the time, but I wasn't thinking.

Wow what a way to go out

Loved every second of this show. Before I wrote this I went back and reread my post back in November from the Hamilton show and I had to laugh. I was so dissapointed with the Lights in the SKy tour I just wanted my old NIN back....... and low and behold I got it.

With only three tracks from the Slip, With Teeth, and Year Zero I couldn't have been happier. Don't get me wrong I love those albums but as a teen of the ninties hearing half of the Downward Spiral kicked my ass........

I would have loved to witness the The Downward Spiral itself but hearing "Im Afraid of Americans", and "Metal", and "The Fragile" were too much, this set was almost too much..... i was smiling ear to ear for the intire show. And for this show to open with 'Now I'm Nothing" and "Terribal Lie" was like a dream.

As for the fact that they were the opening band to Jane's Addiction, it worked in everyone's favor cause if NIN headlined the tour they would not have played a set like this.

Hell I would rather have hear "Closer" over "The Hand that Feeds", I still don't understand why he closes out the set with that before Head Like a Hole every night? but hey witnessing Trent tear into "Mr. Self Destruct" and knocking lights over and throughing mic stands around again reafirmed my belief in NIN as the best live band I have ever seen.

I loved the heavy use of smoke (that can't be good for Trents health) and mood lighting, shit I didn't care that it wasn't all that dark. Thats NIN's live show, dark minimalist lighting and heavy smoke. I didn't care for the U2 light show that was Lights In the Sky and everyone who attended this show and the show in August last year at Air Canada Center or Hamilton or any show on that tour, who is a NIN fan would have to agree that The Wave Goodbye Tour was the best dam show Trents put on since the Fragility tour. Not including the club shows in 2005 ....... those were too small to count.

"The Becoming" and "I do not want this" were probably my favorites I never ever thought I would witness these live.

I would have to say the Downward Spiral is my favorite album of all time and the only way to top this show would be to hear this album from start to finish ...... one can only dream right.

I'm not sure if Trent has really retired or not, I have a feeling there are a couple Nine Inch Nails records to come out. Please release this Ghosts Style Trent and not The Slip ..... here's a free record its on me......

But as for touring I really hope that was his final tour as Nine Inch Nails cause if in 5 years he gets a new band together and tours a new album I don't think we will get a better preformance than this show. I mean I will go, but hopefully Trent has a new gig , new band, new name, new sound, whatever, lets have Nine Inch Nails go out in the blaze of glory that was this fine tour.

It would be cool if there is an offical live album, or DVD from this tour but Trent has stated there won't be, I hope when he gets to Europe he changes his mind and films a couple of shows and Rob cuts a Wave Goodbye Film of some sort, maybe like Closure that would be cool.

This four piece band rocks, wow, I wish I could go to another show.
Maybe the Wave Goodbye will swing a final fall leg through Hamilton.........
I'm not counting on it.

Yeah, maybe...but Like i mentioned before, all of us had a valid passport..

We were well aware of the june 1st date..Which didnt even matter because all of us had a passport well before....But yeah, maybe they were just tightening up security which included acting like a prick..

Thanks but Dime is pretty useless to most of us since you can't sign up for an account easily. I had one once, then it dissapeared and now I've been trying to get a new one for the past few months. I wish people would use TPB or Demonoid instead!

I've the same as you now, and I prefer the TPB one as well. It's balanced louder, and doesn't have any noticeble (to me) distortion. If we can get it seeded I'll keep this one instead.

actually i think i prefer the dime track. its not as clear thats true, but it sounds more like the other NIN bootlegs i've been able to collect through the years. the thing with the pirate bay bootleg is that its so unbelievably clear that you can't discount it at all but what kills it at times is that those jerks next to the guy talked throughout the whole damn show. i have to admit i admire whowever recorded that because i would've flipped shit on those morons mid-recording.

Last night my head was not in a the right place.

i was at this show, it was really cold and i couldn't even get a beer to cheer myself up. i ended up leaving before hurt was over. i wasn't having a good time. although i did enjoy a few songs.

If anyone can PM me and shed a little light on how this is done I'd really appreciate it.

While we are waiting for the release of the multi-cam dvd of this show from Rival on the nin.com toronto june 2 2009 thread, I thought I would share my dvd with everyone. I encourage the other tapers to release their footage as well as the release of rivals mult-cam dvd doesn't look like it will happen.

This dvd is something I made for myself as a momento of the last NIN show that I was at, a collection of the best parts of the experience for me. It contains:

Thanks for posting that here, it's nice to finally see some of my footage used in a fan-edit.

I can only see the YT samples for the time being but I can't WAIT to get a pal to burn me a copy of the DVD so I can see the rest, it looks GREAT so far!!!
