finally found the time to write this up.....as soon as i got back from london i went through a whirlwind of graduation parties and weddings, and today i secured a future job in a new clinic.....
Background:
i was one of the lucky people who got a ticket when that extra bundle of tix went on sale a couple of weeks ago....this was my first time to visit london....so i prepared for some blitzkrieg-tourism....i paid an extra 30 euros for a plane ticket that would permit me to stay an extra day....
anyways, i saw buckingham palace, hyde park, parliament square, downing street, trafalgar square, british museum, national gallery, south bank, tate modern, st. paul's cathedral, tower bridge, covent garden area, picadilly circus and soho area.....all on foot and underground. now i have huge blisters under my feet..... and i still haven't had a chance to rest from all that walking and the Nine Inch Nails concert!
Astoria, March 31st:
at first, i'd planned to go to the ETS rendezvous at the waterloo clock, but i was at the tate modern, so i decided to put that off and see if i could recognize someone directly at the venue. then, since i knew i had to wait until 7 to pick up my ticket at the box office i figured i was going to end up at the end of the queue anyways....so i eventually put off going to the astoria until 6. and this is the part i feel kinda guilty about: about 5 minutes after i got to the venue, the doors were opened both to the people in the huge queue and to us people who did not receive the ticket by mail....i was fifth in line....which means i basically did not wait at all and was one of the first people to go in. so when i heard people had been waiting since 4 a.m. and i had gotten in as soon as i arrived to the venue i kinda felt bad for them....of course that made up for the shipping and handling seetickets refused to refund me, the greedy pigs....they blatantly stole my money on that move.
after checking my things in the coatroom, i walked into the club....there was already a thin layer of people standing eagerly in front of the stage...i was too tired from walking all over london so i went to buy a tshirt and then headed to the bar for a gin tonic....of course i got ripped-off for the drink....the 3.60 was fine, but they gave me a tiny ass cup.
i went back in and realized that there was a small raised level in front of the sound engineering mixer section. there were people sitting there already.... luckily, i found a spot dead center....i was incredibly happy with my position. center, a step higher to see over the heads jumping in the moshpit, and in front of the sound engineers (hey, they mix the instruments so that everything sounds perfect to them, from where they're standing....so there's no better place to hear things right at a concert).
i met a couple that had driven all the way from south wales, pat and scott, who were nice enough to keep my spot while i went to the bathroom (black guy in there did everything he could for a tip, squeezing the soap into my hands, turning on the water, handing me the paper towels, dousing me with pleasantries...it made me feel pretty fuckin wierd, but i dropped whatever spare change i had into his plate).....shortly after i got back to my spot with a beer, the dresden dolls came on.
the dresden dolls:
i had no idea what i was going to see when these two musicians went on stage....i was in milan a month ago when they played at the transilvania but unfortunately did not manage to go see them....i hadn't even tried to download their songs to see what i was going to happen pre-NIN.
honestly, i was quite surprised.....and found their short liveset pleasant and highly entertaining....and it seemed to me that the crowd found them quite enjoyable as well, so i was kinda perplexed to see so many people with negative remarks regarding this band. these two musicians are very talented....their act put even more energy into their music...i loved the quirky silentmovie-type movements....and the drummer/mime was a total badass.....there were times where it seemed like he improvised extra beats within his variating patterns, and it turned into quite a display of his skills.....(at one point during the NIN concert i remember thinking that this guy had outplayed jerome dillon....but of course it's not jerome's fault many NIN drum patterns are constant and not often complex). the girl had a great voice....her ability to interchange singing styles within the same phrases so as to get a chorus effect impressed me.....her piano playing came off nice and clean. they played without a metronome in their ears, so for them to have played so well with all the variations in their songs it was quite easy to realize that they have their shit together.
and i can't deny that i really liked how they were dressed too....fit the part very well.... i have to say that i find singers who perform in thigh-high stockings and garter belts inevitably sexy. even more so if they actually know what they're doing.....
the highlight for me was coin operated boy.....it was the first time in my life i laughed at the lyrics to a song being performed....."i can even fuck him in the ass"
i caught onto the writing on the keyboard "kurtweill" assuming it was a play of words.....being a bit fond on synths, i couldn't help but think of the kurzweil synth....i thought maybe she used the famous brand name as a way to pay an homage to someone.....well check this out:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kurt_Weill .....very fitting.
nine inch nails:
this was one hell of a concert.
this was my 5th time to see NIN, and besides my first NIN concert in '94, this is easily the second best NIN concert experience of my life.
the setlist was excellent, though i did have hopes they'd play something unusual.....but i'd never heard TDTWWA and Burn live before, so that was good enough! i did expect more new songs, but we only got 3.....i'm sure i'll hear more this summer.
i saw the second date of the fragility tour in 99, and in that concert (even with all the old bandmates) i had the feeling they were kinda cold and outta shape.....but this was not the case last thursday....nine inch nails was on fire, on key, simply perfect. sure there were some tiny execution errors here and there, but the atmosphere and the flow was an example of how all concerts should be. and i have to confirm that trent reznor now has a much better singing voice.....i have never heard him sing so well before. even when he mixed up verses and improvised, it did not interfere with the smoothness of the performance....
i had goosebumps all through the show. the warmth in that tiny venue was simply awesome.
for NIN to start the show with the "frail/wretched" combo was quite unexpected for me....but it was a great way to build things up from the start. "you know what you are" kicks major ass live, the electro beats in it are incredible and (though i hate retroactive comparisons) a bit reminiscent of the TDS era. "the line begins to blur" actually sounded better live to me....the new version of "burn" was very interesting, but i had the feeling the crowd wasn't very much into it and that the band kinda cooled off during this piece unfortunately. i could write something for every song, but to me the climax of the concert was "wish".....the whole crowd went nuts and i think it was during this song that the flowing masses in the mosh pit collapsed.....and all the fists in the air were quite picturesque! even starfuckers, inc. sounded cool, though i still can't understand why that song gets chosen over other gems that never get played....
trent was very much in shape. aaron really is great to watch with those big rock'n'roll leaps and crazy guitar mishandling. jerome looked like he was shooting a U2 video with the light shining on his face and the wind blowing in his hair (i seriously cracked up when i saw that....it just seemed like misplaced imagery), but he played well. alessandro sounded quite capable at handling the modular synths, but unfortunately he was almost always in the dark. jeordie is the only one that kinda bugged me....i swear there were moments where he seemed bored.
anyways, this concert alone was worth every cent i spent to fly over to london. if i'd missed out on this gig, i'd be dying of envy.
After the concert:
as they made us leave the club i headed for the merch window to buy a dresden dolls cd....after a few minutes of pushing and shoving and getting nowhere closer to the guy selling the stuff i decided i'll buy their album via internet.....stepping out of the crowd i ran into a couple of guys talking in italian, which was a good surprise because i'd been wondering all day if there were going to be any other italians at the show.....well, it turned out that they were friends of alessandro and had grown up with him in Forli'....i obviously asked them where the afterparty was going to be, and when they told me it was upstairs i was like "help a brotha out!".....they promptly told me "sorry, VIP pass only...." as if i didn't know......
2 steps later, i ran into a fascinating parisian girl enrolling newcomers to the dresden dolls mailing list..............
once outside, i headed for the back of the venue in hopes of catching a glimpse of something interesting.....there i met another group of italians (from Milan and Genoa)....the girl confessed that she'd come for the 31st but that she'd seen the concert from the night before for free because she'd ran into a record label rep who was handing out free tickets....fucking incredible. lucky her. i noticed crew members were joking around saying "hey, are hanson inside partying with nine inch nails?"
i then ran into a group of ETSers and finally met a few of you, which was cool since i otherwise only know you by what you write....now i actually have seen the faces behind the text...........i witnessed saturnine molesting leo

also, there was a girl in that group that had the most beautiful transparent eyes....
i then made my way towards the tottenham court road station, but as soon as i came up to the entrance of the astoria a bunch of people started to pour out of the door....including alessandro's friends......so i knew then and there that the afterparty was already over....since the night before i'd been told that trent had snuck out of the front, i eagerly waited......after a bit, i realized that people were lining up to get into the astoria for g-a-y night, and there was no way the band was going to come out of the front with all these people there......i made my way back behind the club and saw that there were some minivans waiting.....so i went to the door they'd been bringing equipment out of......about thirty seconds later jeordie opened the door and took a step and had a "oh what the fuck do i do now" face on him.....it was hilarious.....it would've made for an awesome picture. i realized there was no way they were going to autograph anything or chit chat at all.....he then ran into the minivan.....aaron came out next with nonchalance and followed right behind jeordie....next was alessandro......and then finally trent came out, with a guerilla-type cap covering his eyes and just rushed right into the door the bodyguard was holding open. he was just 10 inches away from me when he came out, so i had to fight off any immature fanboy impulse to pat him on the shoulder or whatever....and the cap over his eyes was a clear sign that he was avoiding contact....but the italian girl next to me didn't resist and she started squealing "oh my god i touched trent oh my god oh my god".....i swear it was hilarious!
after NIN left in their little convoy, i headed home.
entirely satiated.
