All I can really say about the show, that may not have been said already, was that it was well worth the 750 mile drive and associated expenditures. Easily, the best of the 5 NIN shows I've seen (and the other 4 were nothing to sneeze at). The Band was on fire, the surprises were great and many, and the venue was awesome.
And now, my little story about the night:
So before the show starts I go out and ask one of the bouncers/security dudes about the giant, official poster/playbill for the show which is on the wall. I had only seen one other, which was outside near the main Boardwalk entrance. Asked him how I could go about getting it? "Man, you're about the 100th person who has asked me that!" he said wistfully, unconcerned. "But I don't have the authority to give it to you and no, I don't know who does. Sorry".
Hmm. This would call for some planning. I knew they would "walk", and the outside one was probably already gone... there was no way I was going all the way back home without this poster.
We had Balcony seats which were great, but during what I knew to be the band's "encore" set I told my sister I was going to head downstairs and catch that part from the floor, and to meet me outside (she knew what I was really up to, LOL). Well the floor did not disappoint and I wished I'd gone down there earlier! But once HLAH started playing, I knew it was time to go stake my claim. Peeked out the door and the poster (as well a surprising amount of security, suits, and a few fans) were out there.
Walked casually over near the poster as if I was checking them all out, then stood near my mark. Gradually inched closer to it. Stood in fornt of it casually, put my hands behind my back and felt all around the edge for some sort of release mechanism, AH the frame edges fold out, got 'em. Poster almost immediately falls out to my feet. HOLY CRAP this thing is thick and heavy!
Stand there for a few secs, gradually start to work my way away from the frame with the poster at my feet when I hear a whistle.... one of the security guards who had appeared to be tied up with a post-disturbance cool-down gestures to me. Shakes his head, says "Uh-uh".
"Seriously?" He gets a more angry-faced. Means business. "Alright, I'm cool, no trouble, but you can't fault a fan for trying right?"
He cracks a slight grin but then sternly says "Wait there".
Shit. Am I gonna get in trouble? No, nobody's coming here. But I don't dare test my luck by going back for that sign. Hell, the damn thing is so fucking big there is no WAY I could even sneak it out of here and down the stairs. But dammit, I already did the hard work and as soon as that mob comes out SOMEBODY's going to grab it. Sonofabitch.
I decide to wait and hope that the crowd is big enough to at least give me once chance to grab-and-go, come what may.
Just then, HLAH finishes and the crowd inside cheers. The guard turns back to m and says,
"Go ahead man, NOW the show is officially done, NOW you can have the sign. Go ahead , take it!"
Cha-Ching!
So as the crowd filters out while I wait for my sister, two people go running up only to see me standing a few feet to the left with a suspicously large white board behind me. Someone else comes and playfully punches me in congratulations, and I get two offers to sell. Nope, it's coming back home with me and my sister now knows firsthand how I ended up with so many road signs in college, among other things...
